Vaz Prep school took a step closer to securing a spot in the semi-finals of the Alberga Cup on Monday November 25th, when they defeated Our Lady of the Angels Prep (OLA)  3-0 at the Liberty Academy field.

Vaz Prep started the game on the front foot pushing back their opponents from the opening whistle and created a few half chances before they took the lead when Zidane Barnes lobbed the OLA keeper Tajhe Montaque, in the 10th min.

The OLA captain Stafford Lowe, who had a good game, picked up a ball in midfield, controlling smartly, before turning and firing just wide of the left post in the 15th minute, establishing his presence in the game.

Vaz continued to control the game however and a beautiful piece of individual skill by Barnes saw him beat three defenders down the right hand side before delivering a good cross. Jhavier Lynch thought he had double the lead for Vaz, only to see his one-time, side footed effort cleared off the line by a defender.

Lynch had another effort on target shortly after but his shot was straight to Montaque in goal. Barnes also tried his luck from distance but Montaque proved to be up to the task once more. Meanwhile Iyare Harris was having a very good game for Vaz on the left side opening up the defence at will.

The penultimate chance of the half fell to Lynch, but Montaque, who had to work overtime left his line to block at the feet of the luckless Lynch. Taje Chamberlain should have made it 2-0 at the half when a perfect cross from Harris need only a touch but he failed to make contact with seconds left on the clock before half time.

The second half was the Iyare Harris show as almost everything good came from the prodigious talent. With OLA lacking anything offensively, they were forced to defend, but found it difficult to cope with the dribbling skills of Harris.

After signaling his intentions with a couple of near misses, Harris got on the score sheet when his determined run saw his get by two defenders before firing a grounder past the hapless Montaque, in the 51st minute to make it 2-0.

Four minutes later Harris returned to score an almost identical goal to make it 3-0, while completing the scoring for the day.

Simba Harris, coach of Vaz Prep, was pleased with the overall team performance, “Two of our main players were out today, so we had to make some adjustments. The players who came in did a good job so we are pleased with the overall showing of the team.

“We should have put away the game from the first half, but the two goals in the second made it comfortable for us in the end.”
