Corinaldi Avenue Primary are the new Champions of the JaVA/St James U-13 School Volleyball Competition, having gotten the better of the 2010 Champions, Irwin Primary, in the keenly contested final.
Lead by their Captain and tournament MVP, Brandon Shaw, Corinaldi rallied from a first set 21-14 loss to take the next two sets 21-14, 15-12, and with it the winners’ trophy and medals.
Corinaldi, who maintained an unbeaten run throughout the competition, had earlier defeated Chetwood Memorial 21-10, 21-10 in their semifinal, while Irwin edged out a spirited Catherine Hall Primary, 21-19, 19-21, 15-12 in their semifinal.
Catherine Hall defeated Chetwood in the third place playoff to secure the last qualifying spot in the National Final at the National Stadium on Wednesday, 11 December 2013. Conroy Allen of Irwin Primary was awarded the President’s Maadd Skills trophy for commendable display of volleyball skill-sets.
Major Warrenton Dixon, JaVA’s School Development Manager, expressed his delight with the development of volleyball in St James. “Today I witnessed the highest quality of volleyball I have seen in this parish in the four-year history of the competition. Any of the four teams that made it to the knock-out round could have won the competition in previous years playing the way they did today. This is a reflection of the work put in by the Parish Cordinator, Mr. Ricardo Williams, other administrators and teachers/coaches in the parish.”
“To say that this is an encouraging sign would be an understatement,” Major Dixon continued. “Our children of today are going to make Jamaica proud on the international volleyball stage tomorrow. It has started already with our 16-year-old boys who recently dominated opponents to qualify to the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. JaVA is doing all of this without sponsorship; my hope is that Corporate Jamaica will come on board and invest in this bright future to get us there sooner.”
