President of the Jamaica Paralympic Association (JPA), Christopher Samuda, has been appointed to the Judicial Commission of World ParaVolley, the global governing body for the para sport of volleyball and the successor of the World Organization Volleyball for Disabled (WOVD) which was established in 1981.

President Samuda’s appointment for the term 2021 to 2024 was unanimously endorsed by the Board of Directors of the world apex organisation which is headquartered in the Netherlands and responsible for managing and controlling the conduct of international volleyball competitions for men, women and youth.

In reacting to his appointment, President Samuda said: “I think more of Jamaica having a seat which I will simply occupy for a time with, I pray, timeless and reasoned judgement as I commit to selfless service.”

The Judicial Commission sits apart from the Board of Directors of World ParaVolley and functions as an independent Court of Appeal for members.

“The rule of law is manifest in the ethos of World ParaVolley. In competitive sport, where excessive emotions may impair the character and spirit of the game, the rule restores in the interest of the collective good but recognises the individual right of appeal” remarked President Samuda.

The JPA boss will serve with members from Great Britain, Australia, United States and Belgium and stated that he “feels very privileged to be a part of a team which has the responsibility of shaping sport governance.” In 1976, volleyball was included in the Paralympic Games Programme, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and by 1980 it had transitioned to being a regular event on the international calendar with sitting volleyball quickly becoming one of the main team sports in the Paralympic Programme and a Paralympic sport.
