Lyssons Primary were crowned the 2013 champions of the JaVA U-13 School Volleyball Competition after getting the better of Corinaldi Ave Primary in the finals 25-5; 25-11.
Lyssons Primary were crowned the 2013 champions of the JaVA U-13 School Volleyball Competition after getting the better of Corinaldi Ave Primary in the finals 25-5; 25-11.
Both Lyssons and Corinaldi had arrived at the National Finals undefeated at parish level. Each team also remained unbeaten through four preliminary round matches, the quarterfinals and semifinals at the National Finals on Wednesday 11 December 2013.
In the first semifinal Lyssons got the better of former champions Unity Primary 15-10; 15-12. Corinaldi showed dogged character to surprise defending champions and favorites Savana la mar Primary 13-15, 15-6; 11-9 in the second semifinals.
They had long rallies during their match against Lyssons but that task appeared to have been a Bridge Too Far as MVP, Robert Napier, and President Madd Skills awardee, Deadre Davis, lead Lyssons charge to victory, taking the national title to St Thomas for the first time. This also marked the first occasion in the four-year history of the competition that a Westmoreland school was not in the finals.
In the battle of the former national champions and Westmoreland kingpins, Unity Primary clipped Sav 17-15 in the third place play-off. The match was one of the most keenly contested of the day and marked the sixth time the teams were meeting this year at parish and national levels. With today’s win Unity squared the head-to-head at three matches a piece.
President of the Jamaica Volleyball Association, Steve Brown, was very pleased with the display of ball control by all twenty-two teams that advanced to the National Finals as well as several teams that did not advance. “The coaches in the schools have done very well, setting the condition for the children to join others who are being prepared for future championships. Based on what I saw in the recent Caribbean Volleyball Youth Championship, the only thing preventing Jamaica from dominating the region and moving on to becoming a volleyball powerhouse internationally, is the limited time our teams spend in training due to funding challenges. I am convinced the if we get some funding support, these children will make Jamaica proud, just as Rojey Hutchinson and Shavar Bryan have done in qualifying to the Youth Olympic Games in China next year.”

Greater Portmore, Portsmouth and Irwin Primaries failed to show.
