Big Problems at Old Trafford

With the ‘New Era’ well on the way, there is a lot of speculation about what is going on inside Manchester United. The retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson was seen as a turning point in the history of the club and based on how things have been going so far this season, the turning point seems to be a very bad one.

With the ‘New Era’ well on the way, there is a lot of speculation about what is going on inside Manchester United. The retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson was seen as a turning point in the history of the club and based on how things have been going so far this season, the turning point seems to be a very bad one.

Spoiled with success and being the best since the inception of the Premier League, for many Man United fans this is something new and hard to accept. The Red Devils find themselves in 9th position in the Premier League, earning just 22 points from 15 games. The defending champions are currently 7 points behind city rivals Manchester City in fourth place and 13 points behind leaders Arsenal. It is the worst start for the Red Devils since the 2001/2002 season where they recovered from a poor start to finish in third place, 10 points behind winners Arsenal.

Having won the league comfortably last season, it is quite surprising to many, how badly things are going for the Old Trafford club. Manager David Moyes said that he takes full responsibility for the poor league form but there is a lot more going on than just poor performances like the lack of motivation, inspiration and leadership on the pitch.

There are strong rumours that Robin van Persie is not a fan of Moyes’ training methods and has blamed the former Everton boss for his injury problems so far this season. Another rumour coming out of the AON Training Complex that van Persie has handed in a transfer request as he refuses to continue playing under Moyes. Rio Ferdinand has also spoken out about Moyes’ selection policy. The 35 year old defender says that Moyes selects his team minutes before match time, which doesn’t give the players enough time to get to a level of intensity that they normally get under Sir Alex. Ferdinand says that the players are left wondering if they will be selected to play or not which makes you feel like a ‘mad man’ not knowing who will play.

The players are said to be unhappy with Moyes’ regime and if this is to be believed then it is showing in the results. Moyes has failed to play the same team for 2 consecutive games. Even after a fantastic display against Bayer Leverkusen the 50 year old Scotsman still made changes to the team in the next game. After a fantastic victory against Arsenal at Old Trafford, it was expected that it would have been the motivation that would inspire the Red Devils to go on a positive run of form. However, it has been the total opposite as Man United has picked up just 2 points from 4 games.

At this point it would seem that a top four finish is the priority for the Red Devils. This surely will not sit well with the Old Trafford faithful because challenging for the title is what they have become accustomed to. However, they surely cannot afford to slip any further and will surely be looking to pick up all three points away at Aston Villa this weekend.
