Cuba left crying as T&T top Group A in CFU U-20’S

Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago met Tuesday October 22 to decide who would top Group A of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-20 Football Finals at the Waterhouse Mini-Stadium in what was supposed to be a massive showdown.

The first half was tight as both teams battled for supremacy in wet and slippery conditions cause by rain earlier in the day. Trinidad and Tobago created the better chances and could have gone ahead long before they scored in the 40th minute.

Cuba were not in the mood to roll over and play dead and equalized on the stroke of half time to leave the fans on the edge of their seats.

T&T returned a more focused group in the second half, scoring two more goals while shutting out their opponents in the second stanza, to finish as group winners.

Cuban tears flowed freely at the sound of the final whistle showing just how much the game meant to them. Despite the loss, Cuba will advance to the semifinal round where they will face off with Group  B winners Jamaica on Friday October 25.

Speaking with Yardie Sports after the game, T&T coach Izler Browne said “We should have killed off the game as a contest from the first half but we didn’t put away our chances. I liked the way the girls responded in the second half to get us the win.

“We are happy to top the zone, it puts us in pole position and it means we avoid Jamaica for now, which is a good thing. Killing off our opponents is clearly something we need to work on but overall it was a pleasing performance.”
