The second round of the Sherwin Williams Women’s Premier League begins today with a full round of matches. Barbican defeated GC Foster College in the mid-season final to retain their trophy andnow all the teams will now turn their attention securing a place in the semifinals.

Zone B is intriguingly poised with four of the six teams in the zone all locked eight points at the top of the table and separated only by goal difference. These teams are, GC Foster College, Los Perfectos, Trelawny Women’s FC and Waterhouse. The fifth place team is Arnett Gardens who sits only a point behind the top four which makes predicting the two teams that will qualify from this zone next to impossible. The other team in the zone, Frazsiers Whip, have yet to secure a point and are already virtually out of contention.

Waterhouse and Los Perfectos who both had contrasting wins in the Colour Scape K.O. competition last week will battle each other at the Duhaney Park field in hunt of three points and a jump to the front of the pack in this keenly contested group.

Arnett Gardens hosts GC Foster College who may be vulnerable at this point in time having lost the mid season final and their knock out matches back to back against Barbican and Harbour View respectively. A win for Arnett Gardens would put them right in the mix while a win for GC Foster will restore confidence in a squad struggling to maintain performances similar to last season.

Of all the contending team’s Trelawny has the best chance to steal a march in the zone as they host cellar dwellers Frazsiers Whip who have been woeful both home and away in this their debut season. There may be a turn-around taking place at the bottom placed team however, as Barbican were able to score only 2 goals in the knock out game between the two last week.

Zone A is not nearly as exciting with defending champions Barbican clearly out front on maximum 12 points from 4 games. Harbour View have 9 points, UWI WFC are on 6 and Olympic Gardens have 3 while bottom placed St. Thomas are yet to gain a single point.

Harbour View hosts Barbican who beat them 1-0 on the first day of the season but will hold no fear of the champions as confidence grows at the club. The ‘big 2-0 win’ over GC Foster away in the knock out last week will only add to their confidence and boost their self belief. There is a feeling at Harbour View that the five time champions can be beaten and that they are the team capable of ending an unbeaten run that dates back to 2011.

However, putting an end to the run that the Charles Edward’s conditioned team has put together will require a very special performance. Barbican have set themselves the target of another unblemished season, similar to last year and have so far lived up to those expectations, winning each game played without conceding a single goal. ‘Flawless’ is the word at Barbican these days.

The zone’s other game pits third placed UWI against fourth placed Olympic Gardens in a game to be played at the UWI Bowl. A win for Olympic will see them draw level with UWI and give them a chance of mounting a challenge for a semifinal spot. The visitors however need to be aware of the wounded animal that UWI appear to be at the moment. The UWI feel aggrieved by a refereeing decision that cost them a spot in the semifinals of the knock out and will be looking for someone to lay their frustrations on. When both teams met on the first day of the season, the UWI won by four goals to nil but since then Olympic have improved and may make it more difficult this time around.

All games begin at 3:30pm except the games between Harbour View and Barbican and also Arnett Gardens and GC Foster, those games begin at 4pm.
