New Manchester United manager David Moyes got his first taste of silverware when he led Manchester United to FA Community Shield glory against Wigan

Athletic. The trophy was delivered by a brace from striker Robin van Persie and a man-of-the-match performance from midfield maestro Michael Carrick.

Moyes would be pleased to have captured the first piece of silverware on offer this season but he may not be pleased with the overall performance from the Red Devils. It wasn’t a typical fluent display for the English champions but they did enough to secure the Shield and most importantly got a clean sheet in the process.

The match started with United dominating the early exchanges and was rewarded very early on for their efforts. After some neat passing in midfield, van Persie spread the ball out wide on the left to Patrice Evra who picked out the Dutchman with a fine cross which he headed expertly to the far post. Despite taking an early lead, the Red Devils failed to create any further chances in the first half.

Danny Welbeck came close after receiving a pass from Tom Cleverley then spun and saw his curling effort pushed away by Scott Carson in Wigan’s goal. Wigan didn’t trouble the United goal as their only threat of any significance was when James McClean fired the ball across the face of goal with no one inside to attack it.

The second half started very much in the same vein as the first half with Manchester United dominating possession. They got their second in the 59th minute when van Persie collected a pass from Welbeck and worked the ball onto his left foot before unleashing a shot which deflected off James Perch and into the back of the net.

After that it was all smooth sailing for the Red Devils as Carrick just spread the ball around while dictating play. Evra was also enjoying his time down the left flank as he was a constant threat going forward but never forgot his defensive responsibilities.

Moyes dedicated the victory to Sir Alex Ferguson as he now looks to start the title defense against Swansea City at the weekend. There is still a lot of work to be done by the Red Devils but there is no doubt that this will give them a much needed boost going into their first premier league match against the Swans.
