After just one month into the new season of the United Soccer League (USL) Championship, Junior Flemmings leads the goal scoring charts with seven goals from just six games.

The Jamaican international has hit the ground running this term and fired his team, Phoenix Rising FC, to the top of the league with an eye-catching performance last Saturday.

Flemmings scored his first hattrick for the club as Phoenix Rising FC beat New Mexico United for the first time in a come from behind 5-2 win.

After seeing his Jamaican counterpart, Romeo Parkes put New Mexico United ahead after just five minutes, Flemmings drew Phoenix level in the 17th minute.

Phoenix then surged into a 3-1 lead shortly after half time, only for New Mexico to reduce the deficit to one, when they made it 3-2 in the 59th minute.

The Former Jamaica College striker then took the game by the scruff of the neck, scoring two unanswered goals to pilot his team to a memorable victory over their rivals.

Phoenix now leads Group B with 13 points from six games with four wins, one draw and one loss.

Flemmings had a very good season in front of goal last season for Phoenix, scoring 15 regular season goals from 25 games. He also scored two goals in the post-season had ended for a ultimate total of 17 goals when he scored once in the playoffs and once in the Open Cup game.

The strikers said his fantastic start to the season can be credited to the “hard work” during the preseason.

No goal target has been set for this season, but Flemmings certainly knows what would be unacceptable.

“Anything less than last year would be a failure,” he surmised.

The 24 year old is hoping to take his goal scoring skills to Europe and plans to plunder more goals while biding his time and remaining on everyone’s radar.

“Europe is always a possibility, it’s just a matter of time and it all depends on the opportunity.”

Jamaica is already into the final round of Concacaf World Cup qualification for Qatar 2022 and as long as he continues to find the back of the net with such regularity then certainly Flemmings will be among the consideration.

But even with his current form, Flemmings will be taking nothing for granted.

“I still have a long way to go. “He (Whitmore) is the one that will make the decision. I can only control what I can control which is to keep performing well,” he reasoned.
