The fourth staging of the ISSA/FLOW Super Cup Competition gets going today with what promises to be an exciting double header at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex The new look competition which begins at the quarter final round instead of the usual round of sixteen will see Ben Francis Cup champions Clarendon College take on Calabar High at 5pm before St. Elizabeth Technical face St. Andrew Technical in the feature encounter.
Clarendon College goes into the encounter on the back of a magnificent come from behind 4-1 victory over Dinthill Technical in the Ben Francis Cup final and will be bubbling with confidence. Despite having just one full day of rest between lifting the rural area knockout title and beginning their quest for the all-island knock out crown, the unbeaten ‘Cula Blue’ will be ready to play the well rested Calabar.
The boys from Red Hills Road will be participating in their very first Super Cup and will have to overcome the memory of a 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Jamaica College in the Walker Cup semifinal last Saturday. Coach Lij Simms has had a week to get his boys physically and mentally ready to take on one of the nation’s best attacking units and they must be ready. Defence has been the strength of the ‘Lions’ this season and Calabar will need to be switched on from the very first whistle if they are not to be ripped to shreds by Nicque Daley and company.
The feature is sure to be a tongue twister for the commentators when STETHS do battle with STATHS. Like Clarendon College, STETHS is another DaCosta Cup team that knows how to find the back of the net. STATHS on the other hand, last won a game in regulation time, way back in the first round of the Manning Cup. Like Calabar, STATHS are first timers to the competition. They have a very good defensive set up and in Jeadine White, one of the best goalkeepers in schoolboy football. However, goal scoring is a major issue for the boys from Spanish Town Road.
Both games may take on the same pattern, with the DaCosta Cup teams going on the offensive and the Manning Cup teams content with playing on the counter attack.
No DaCosta Cup team has ever won the Super Cup in it’s short three year history but fans of Clarendon College and St. Elizabeth Technical will be hoping for good starts from their respective teams who will be making their fourth consecutive appearance in this prestigious competition.
