After receiving a sound beating at home at the hands of leaders Portmore United in the Red Stripe Premier League a week ago, Waterhouse FC coach Glendon Bailey was hoping for a proper response from his troops away to Harbour View on Sunday night and at the end of the ninety minutes was pleased to come away with a clean sheet and a point.
Another member of the Waterhouse setup who was pleased with the point was central defender Shawn Lawes. After spending the first four games of the new campaign on the bench and watching his team ship eight goals, the big central defender was happy to be given the nod on Sunday and subsequently helped his team keep their first clean sheet this term.
“Each time we play as defenders we want to have a clean sheet. We have not been so good in the defence line, four games – eight goals, so coming in and injecting my experience and my knowledge was a good input for the team and we are grateful for the clean sheet,” Lawes commented.
The former FC Reno player believes that the clean sheet will be the perfect catalyst for the struggling club.
“Keeping a clean sheet will definitely boost the attackers to go forward, knowing that they have coverage at the back. Definitely we will get some goals and some more clean sheets and get some points to climb up the table,” he assured.
After the cataclysmic second half meltdown against Portmore, Bailey pointed out that the club was experiencing internal problems, but according to Lawes things are way better just one week later.
“We are working on the internal problems, (we are) not a hundred percent but each day we try to get it together. Coach and his staff (are) trying to get it together and I think they are doing a good job, but we are not there as yet. We are trying to put the pieces together to move up the table,” he stated.
“This week the vibes was good in training, it was really, really good. The week before was horrible, coach turned it around and we got together as a family and I think that is why we came away with a clean sheet and a point today (Sunday).”
“We are definitely looking for the ‘W’ for the next game. We need to start winning games and make it a habit, to move up the table, because this season we are not in any relegation battle, up this ladder – Shawn Lawes doesn’t fight relegation battles,” he boasted.
Bailey echoed the optimism of his player, suggesting that a win for his team was not far off.
“We have to build on this. Keeping a clean sheet was very important. We accomplished that, now we start to play disciplined and keeping the shape, so we have to do some work now on the offensive part of the game for the next match. When we find the first win, there will be many after that,”
Waterhouse are currently in 11th position and in the relegation zone with four points from four draws and one loss, however Humble Lion, Montego Bay United and Cavalier SC are all on four points as well, but with a better goal difference than the Drewsland based club. It is early days yet, but getting some wins will help to ease the strain on the squad and bring joy to the hearts of their rapacious fans.
Waterhouse will host Cavalier in Moday Night Football at the Drewsland Stadium at 9pm.
