Romaine Brackenridge picked the perfect time to get his first goal for Tivoli Gardens on Sunday when he scored the late winner to grab all three points for his club against Cavalier SC at the Stadium East Field. In a game riddled with missed chances it was the young defender who came up trumps for the Omar Edwards coached team to help them to only their second win of the season and a move into mid-table following the 1-0 win.
Tivoli Gardens were clearly attacking the left side of the Cavalier defence and Marvin Stewart should have done better with his cross that landed on the roof of the net in only the 4th minute.
A thumping free kick from Rushawn Plummer went just over the crossbar as Cavalier got their first shot to goal.
Alex Marshall had a tame effort on target shortly before he brought out a brilliant save out of Davin Watkins. A giveaway in midfield by Tevin Shaw was pounced upon by Marsh and the lightning quick counter attack ended with the Marshall effort that had Watkins diving low to his left and parrying to safety
Tivoli should have taken the lead when Omar Walcott had a complete miskick in the box but Andre Moulton who seemed surprised that the ball came to him fluffed his effort in front of the empty goal
Four minutes later Shavar Campbell was left holding his head as his shot from 8 yards cannoned back into play from the right upright before being swept away to safety by Walcott
Marsh who was at the centre of everything good for Cavalier pinched the ball off Brackenridge after a miscontrol and fed in Marshall whose shot went just wide of the left upright
Tivoli then missed three chances in the space of 90 seconds or less. A Nicholas Smith shot was blocked before Miquel Ricketts saw his effort charged down. Cavalier was unable to clear their lines and the ball fell to Sean Coleman who was left staring at the sky after missing the goal from inside the six yard box.
The final chance of the half was cleared off the line by the retreating Plummer after his goal keeper was left stranded and Campbell was denied yet again.
The second half was more of the same with Tivoli looking more like the home team than Cavalier. More of the possesion and more of the attacking play was in the favour of Tivoli with Cavalier continuing to play on the counter.
Junior McGregor was introduced at half time and his pace up front was a challenge for the Cavalier defence, especially as the match wore on. With the clock winding down it was clear that the young striker was playing for free kicks near the goal area and the Cavalier defenders were eventually puished for giving up one too many spot kicks.
In the second minute of stoppage time McGregor curled a free kick over the wall that dipped towards the right hand corner of the net and had Peter Harrison scrambling to save. The ball rebounded in to play and after his teammate’s shot was blocked for a second time Brackenridge followed up, blasting the ball into the roof of the net and bagging his first goal for the club from almost on the goal line.
“We were getting some of the clearer chances but then at the end we started to concede a lot of free kicks…and you know free kicks around the box bad things can happen sometimes and it happened to us today,” said a downbeat Rudolph Speid.
“All of the games from the start, we have not been overawed, we have given as much as we have gotten so we will just have to continue in the same vain and hope that we get things right in the furture because we wouldn’t want to change what we have been doing…sometimes you just need a little luck,” he concluded.
Omar Edwards was happy to claim his second win in a week after their dreadful start to the season.
“It was a good win in the end. Cavalier defended stoutly for most of the game. It seemed as if they came for a point , we have managed to take all three in the latter part of the game. I believe that if we had been more clinical that we could have won the game in the earlier stages. It was a good victory in the end, we just have to keep working hard.”
Tivoli moved from 8th up to 5th and now have 7 points while Cavalier remain on 4 points and slip a place down to 8th
