Portmore United will take on Arnett Gardens in the finals of the Red Stripe Premier League on Monday Night in what is expected to be a sizzling contest. Both teams have overcome ordinary seasons after finishing fifth and sixth respectively and find themselves in a position to capture either their sixth or fifth premier league title.
The Portmore United players are bubbling with confidence and while respecting the opposition are hopeful of glory after falling at the final hurdle last term.
Maliique Foster was given the start against the UWI FC in the return leg semi-final last Sunday and was very influential in the first goal of the game that drew the tie level 2-2 on aggregate.
“I work hard for the goal and I am happy for the goal and I feel good to know that we are back into the final – we have to stay focused and stay together and pull it off,” said a delighted Foster after the game although the goal was credited to UWI defender Jamie Robinson.
The other goal scorer for Portmore, Michael Binns, scored a peach of a free kick in extra time, that proved to be the match winner.
“We have been working hard and this is the result of hard work. It’s a wonderful feeling to be back in the final,” he said.
The veteran Binns is aware of the threat that Arnett holds and is expecting a brilliant final from tow evenly matched teams.
“It’s going to be a tough one. It’s gonna be a good final, that final gonna be a class final to tell you the truth. Arnett group is a good group over all. They have a lot of quality players, we are not going to focus on one player, we are going to go out there and play team football.”
Portmore captain, Ewan Grandison has been rock solid in the centre of the park and will need to be at his best to keep out the likes of the competition’s hottest striker at the moment, Fabian Reid.
For Grandison winning the final is the ultimate aim after missing out last year.
“I am really looking forward to pulling this one off. The guys are relaxed and ready to work,” he declared.
“Arnett plays as a team so we need to match them and play them man to man and get the better of them.”
“A win in the final would mean the world to me because we fell short last year. If we don’t win football would mean nothing to me, we have to get a hold of a cup this term. We have reached the finals again, so we have to win this one,” he declared passionately.
