Hydel Prep comfortably retained the JISA/TASTEE Prep Schools National Athletics Championships on Saturday after trailing rivals Vaz Prep for the first two days of the three day event, claiming their 12th consecutive hold on the crown.

Hydel won by 28 points scoring 243 points compared to Vaz Prep’s tally of 215 points. Mona Prep who was second last year tallied 118 points this time around to finish third. Belair Prep was the best placed rural team, finishing fourth with 116 points while Quest who scored 73.5 points rounded out the top five.

The Champions were made to work hard by the early leaders who remained in front until just before the relays when Hydel took a 5 point lead at 155 to 150. The Ferry-based school, then pulled away from their rivals, winning the first four relays to open up a gap and were never likely to get caught from there.

Both sprint medley relays and both Class One 4x100m relays went the way of the Corey Bennett coached team who powered away from the chasing pack as their senior athletes showed their superior strength.

They closed the show in style, taking the final two relays, the girls and boys 4x200m, to crown yet another championship victory.

Jounee Armstrong of Vaz prep topped Class One Girls with 20 points while Jayd’n Johnson of Sts. Peter & Paul who won the 100m and finished second in the 200m, was Class One champion boy with 16 points.
