Girvon Brown is currently playing for his fourth club in the Red Stripe Premier League and he has never felt more at home. The player joined the club in their first year in the RSPL last season and ended as their leading scorer with 14 goals.
“From the first day I came to UWI I said – wow I like this team,” he told Yardie Sports about his initial contact with the club.
His return to form at the Mona based club after transferring from relegated Cavalier SC, saw him pick up an overseas contract at the end of the last campaign, which resulted him missing the start of the 2016-2017 season for UWI.
The 30 year old has slotted back in seamlessly on his return from his overseas obligations and has been among the goals once again. It was his goal that drew UWI level in the first leg semi-final against Portmore United before his namesake Patrick Brown (no relation) got the winner for the Mona based team.
The striker and his teammates are now one game away from a first ever RSPL final and they are anxious to get the job done. Brown will be looking to add to his 3 goals so far this term in an effort to drag his team into their first premier league final.
“I have been at Cavalier, St. Georges, Arnett but I never came to this position yet.”
Brown admits that it had a negative effect on the team after they failed to finish top of the pile at the end of the regular season when they lost 0-2 to Portmore United in the final game of the regular season. He insists that getting into the final at the expense of their nemesis is now priority one.
“Getting into the final is very important. After we lost to Portmore and Humble Lion won the million dollars, I think that it took a toll on the team, but right now we are steadfast in winning this second leg.”
Brown has all the confidence in his teammates and hails the support around the team as a key factor in what they have been able to achieve in their two years in top flight football.
“UWI is a magnificent unit right now to me. The support around the team is great, the principal, the staff plus the students they come out and support the team 100%.
“It would be huge if we went all the way to the final and won it, not just for the University only but for the surrounding communities also, so it would be huge, it would be a very big accomplishment for the University.”
But before Brown and his teammates can dream about lifting the title, they must first get pass an experienced Portmore outfit that is just as determined to make it to the final.
The two teams will go at it this afternoon at the UWI Bowl starting at 3pm.
