Tired Elaine Thompson not concerned with times

Jamaica’s double Olympic sprint champion and fast rising sprint queen Elaine Thompson, put on a great show for her fans inside the National Stadium last Saturday, going away from the field to win the Women’s 200m at the Jamaica International Invitational Meet.

The 24 year old came off the turn just ahead of the field and powered away from her challengers in the last 80 meters to finish more than five meters ahead of second place Shericka Jackson in 22.09s.

Thompson has run quite a number of races so far this season competing in the middle east and the far east in back to back meets recently and she is starting to feel the effects. Speaking with reporters after her win on Saturday, she admitted that it has been a hectic and tiring start to the 2017 season.

“It been a hectic season, just coming from Shanghai to come here and run another fast time…it’s where I am at right now in the season so I have to continue to stay focused and just put in the work,” she explained.

The long legged sprinter has put together a good series of early season races and has looked miles ahead of the competition so far with some fast times in the mix. Her 22.09s on Saturday equaled the world leading time in the event so far this season.

“I am always happy (with the time), I am a little bit tired now because I run back to back competitions, it’s been a hectic and long trip to Doha then to come back and then going to Shanghai. It’s my first time going to do two meets with hectic travelling, nevertheless I still come out here and run an equal world lead, so it is a really good feeling.”

With all the miles she has already clocked, Thompson still had a pleasing message for all her fans.

“Just always look out a bigger and better performance (from me). I can’t think about how tired I am, I just have to continue to put in the work and perform all the time.”

Thompson is scheduled to run the 200m at the Prefontaine Classic, the next stop in the Diamond League Series, which begins on Friday.
