Jamaican Olympian and Kansas State’s Discuss wonder girl, Shadae Lawrence was in spankingly good form over the weekend at the Big 12 Conference Championship in Atlanta, helping her team, the Kansas State Wildcats to secure the Women’s Big 12 title.
The 24-year-old, former Hydel High and Vere Technical athlete hurled the implement to a new national female Discuss record with an effort of 62.59 metres to secure the title, winning by 5.4 metres ahead of her rivals who never looked like matching her.
It may not be a coincidence that the home venue bears a part of the champion’s name, Rock Chalk Park – Lawrence Stadium, as the toss she made established a Big 12 meet record, besting the previous mark of 60.18m done by Jessica Maroszek of Kansas in 2014, by over two meters.
The Jamaican female Discus record was improved upon just a few weeks ago by another Olympian, Florida State’s, Kellion Knibb who had a mark of 61.34 meters.
Lawrence however, showed that she is ready to tussle with the best in the world come this summer’s World Championships, to be held in London.
Other outstanding Jamaican athletes on the final day included Olympian and Texas senior Chrisann Gordon winning the 400 in 51.40 seconds.
Texas Freshman hurdler Rushelle Burton- the former St Andrew and Camperdown High standout claimed first title in the 100 hurdles in a win aided 12.70 seconds (+3.5mps).
Texas Senior Senoj-Jay Givans sped to 10.03 to finish second in the Men’s 100m final and 21.18 seconds for sixth in the Men’s 200m finals.
Lawrence’s Twin Sister, Shardia cut the sand at 13.79m to finish runner up in the Women’s Triple Jump finals.
Texas Freshman, Long Jumper O’Brien Wasome leapt 7.77m to cop second in the Men’s final, followed by a 16.17 m for fourth in the Triple Jump final.
Wasome and Givans were also a part of the team’s sprint relay victory as their team won the male team championship.
Kansas State’S Ranae McKenzie finished third in the women’s 400m hurdles final in 58.23 seconds.
Christoff Bryan finished 4th in the Men’s High Jump with a height of 2.11m
