On a night where the tune was not being played according to script, Holmwood Technical and St Jago reaped big dividends from the Girls sprint finals on the penultimate night of Champs.

The Class Four finals went the way of the favourite with St Jago’s Brianna Lyston opening a substantial margin mid race to win the event in 11.86 (-0.7m/s). She led home a quinella, with teammate Danae Nembhard rallying to snatch second spot in 12.08 seconds ahead of Edwin Allen’s Tia Clayton in 12.28 seconds.

The Class Three finals was a mix of emotions and dramas as pre-event favourite, defending champion and top female sprinter at the Championships, Edwin Allen’s Kevona Davis left devastated after being disqualified for a false start.

The race was won by previous double sprint champion from Class Four, Sashieka Steele of Holmwood Technical, equaled Shauna Helps’s record of 11.50 seconds ( 0.4 m/s). Gabrielle Matthews of Hydel High 11.73 sec and Krystal Sloley Campion College, 11.86 seconds, were second and third respectively.

There has been much improvement from Holmwood Technical’s Michae Harriot, who despite not finding her running until about 60m, managed to dispatch the Class Two Girls field to secure victory in 11.63 seconds ( – 1.2m/s). Kemba Nelson of Mount Alvernia High 11.72 seconds, secured the runner up spot while defending champion Kimone Shaw of St. Jago High had to settle for third in 11.74 seconds.

St Jago’s Aneka Brissett fulfilled her promised showed all year long with she ran 11.41 (-1.1m/s) to defeat the defending champion, Patrice Moody of Edwin Allen High 11.67 secs and Renee Shaw of Excelsior High 11. 72.

Brisset’s 11.41 into a strong head winds suggest that she is capable of running faster in better conditions and she should now be confident at securing the double, with advancing to today’s final.
