A 28th minute strike from the ageless Jermaine “Teddy” Johnson took Tivoli Gardens FC to a 1-0 win over defending champions Montego Bay United FC at Wespow Park on Sunday in the Red Stripe Premier League. The win also took the West Kingston based team to the top of the league with a set of matches to go in the second round of the competition.

Mobay United led the league by three points at the start of the contest but Tivoli have inched ahead on goal difference with the win; as both teams are now locked on 42 points.

The UWI FC and Humble Lion FC played out a feisty 1-1 draw at the Mona Bowl, with the home team coming from behind to secure a point after both teams had been reduced to ten men.

The visiting Humble Lion went ahead just before half time courtesy of an own goal following a melee inside the six yard box, but the UWI responded through substitute Patrick Brown in the 79th minute. The big midfielder drove through the middle of the park before shifting the ball unto his left foot and unleashed a thunderbolt from the top of the box into the bottom left hand corner of the net, beating goalkeeper Kadeem Davis all ends up.

Earlier both teams had a player ejected for violent conduct, Taniel McKenzie for Humble Lion and Ramoun Reid for UWI.

Both teams had a number of chances to win the game after the UWI equalizer, but both sets of strikers were guilty of a lack of composure in front of goal.

The point for UWI sees them remain in third position on 39 points, three behind the top two teams Tivoli Gardens and Mobay United while Humble Lion slipped a place to fifth on 36 points.

Portmore United took advantage of the draw between UWI and Humble Lion, sneaking up a place to fourth following a comprehensive 3-1 win over the struggling Arnett Gardens.

The game sprung to life late in the first half as three goals in six minutes had the crowd buzzing at the Prison oval. Maalique Foster gave the hosts the lead in the 36th minute only to see Leon Strickland draw his Arnett Gardens team level three minutes later. But the hosts would take the advantage to the locker room as Cleon Pryce restored their lead in the 42nd minute.

Portmore made the game safe with just over 20 minutes to play when Michael Binns scored to make it 3-1 in the 68th minute. Portmore moved up to 37 points with their first win in three games, one ahead of Tivoli and two behind the UWI.

Arnett Gardens have now suffered back to back losses after starting the year in good form with two wins on the trot. But they remain in 6th position despite being winless in 180 minutes of football.

Jamalco FC picked up three crucial points to end a bad run of four defeats in a row and effectively dragged Reno FC back into the relegation scrap, following a 1-0 win at the Wembley Centre of Excellence.

A 29th minute goal from Tevin Garnett was enough to settle the contest for Jamalco who moved up a spot to sixth place and have now closed the gap on Reno to just two points. Jamalco now have 23 points while Reno who were suffering their first loss in four games remain on 25 points.

Bottom of the table Boys Town and 9th place Marverley/Hughenden played out a 1-1 draw at the Barbican field in a game both teams desperately needed to win. The result means Boys Town remains rooted to the foot of the table on 16 points while Marverley slips to 7th place while remaining on 21 points.

In the day’s late game played at the Waterhouse Mini-stadium, neither the hosts nor the visitors, Harbour View, could break the deadlock as the game ended 0-0 despite numerous chances being created by both teams.

A number of senior players returned to their respective starting line-ups which resulted in better ball possesion by both teams, but the area of goal scoring still haunts both Waterhouse and Harbour View. Waterhouse with 17 goals  scored and Harbour View with 14 goals scored are the worst performing teams in front of goal in the league to date.

The competition breaks this weekend for the playing of knock out football competitions throughout the island.
