The ISSA/FLOW Super Cup football competition will crown its third champion in its three year history on Saturday as two first time finalists, Wolmers Boys and Cornwall College will do battle for the title, beginning at 6:00pm at Sabina Park. It is the first time that the final will not be an All-Manning affair.

Wolmers’ Boys will look to be the third urban area team lift the crown while Cornwall College will be looking for their place in history, as the first rural area team to lift the coveted trophy.

On their way to the final, Wolmers defeated Little London 6-0 in the round of 16 before edging Kingston College 1-0 in the quarter finals. They then staved off the challenge of a determined St. Elizabeth Technical team in a sudden death penalty shoot-out semi-final win last Saturday.

Cornwall College defeated Denham Town 2-0 in the round of 16 before their monumental clash with rivals Rusea’s High in the quarterfinal. That game ended 1-1 after extra time before Cornwall prevailed in a penalty shootout.

An equally exciting semi-final against DaCosta Cup contenders Clarendon College ended 4-2 after Cornwall went into the half time breaking trailing 1-2. A sublime second half hat-trick from Jourdine Fletcher saw Cornwall College over turn the deficit and march into their first Super Cup final.

The grand finale is certain to be attack versus defence, as Cornwall College will pit their attacking flair against the stout defence of a resolute Wolmers’ team.

Cornwall College, who is guided by the veteran coach Dr. Dean Weatherly, plays all out attacking football most of the time and that is expected to be on show tonight with Peter Lee Vassell pulling the strings in midfield and supplying the likes of Fletcher, who said he felt “special” after registering his hat-trick last week. His goals will be needed again in the final.

The Wolmers team is guided by the pragmatic Vassell Reynolds and they are expected to adopt a defensive posture, especially having played a game just over 48 hours ago to qualify for the semi-finals of the Manning Cup.

Their opponents will come into the game with fresher legs so fans can expect the Wolmers’ team to display their familiar style of playing behind the ball and looking to counter on the break.

The Wolmers’ captain Jahwani Hinds has been imperious at the back, while their goalkeeper Shamar Jamieson is probably the best at saving penalties in all of schoolboy football. Wolmers has given up just one goal in the run of play in the Super Cup and will be relying on their defence to see them through to the title.

The big and powerful Alphanso Gooden leads the line for them and is deadly from 12 yards. Yonnick Elliott is their main outlet in transition from defence to attack, but it is the very effective Andrew Daley who controls the pace and tempo of the Wolmers team. Rivaldo English has been blowing hot and cold in the last few games and will need to return with renewed focus come kick off time.

It is anyone’s guess as to who will be the champions of 2016 but it is quite clear that the winner will have to earn the title tonight. Do not rule out the possibility of penalties deciding the contest.
