Kingston College continued to impress in the ISSA/Flow Manning Cup as they brushed aside Papine High 2-0 on Friday, to stay perfect after three games.
A Rashawn Mackison brace ensured that KC stayed atop their group, with a maximum nine points and they are yet to concede a goal.
“We showed character and mentally we were tough,” Ludlow Bernard said. “ I am happy to know the lads really showed how tough they are as they have taken three more points on a surface that was not what we would have wanted to play on.”
Papine has been the ‘Purples’ biggest test thus far as the Gordon Town Road based school was very disciplined in defense for most of the game. The game was not fluent in the first half for either team as they found it hard to keep possession of the football for long periods.
The ball was played mostly in midfield as both teams failed to settle. The Papine defenders did not take any chance at the back, clearing their lines by any means to ensure KC was not getting space and comfort to create chances.
Mackison broke the hearts of the Papine team and their supporters, when he arrived in the six yard box to slot home a right sided cross from Denilson Simpson just before half time.
After the break KC tried to keep possession of the ball but Papine did not allow that to happen for long periods, as they were very organized as a unit in defense. Like they started out, both teams battled in the midfield for control of the game under difficult playing conditions.
The very reliable Mackison, gave the Purples some security when he put away a spot kick in the 57th minute. He won the penalty after he tried to put a ball over a defender’s head but was stopped by the defender’s hand. Mackison who had missed two penalties in previous matches, ensured he did not miss a hat trick of penalties.
Both teams tried to find a rhythm but the poor surface and the hard tackling by the Papine defenders caused the game to have numerous interruptions.
“I am very happy for the two goals today as it was important in my team getting three more points,” Rashawn Mackison said. “ I just don’t want to get complacent as I promised my coach to score 20 goals or more and that’s the objective as we look to win all trophies this season.”
Mackison now has seven goals from three games, just three less that his tally last season.
