Excelsior High’s standout athlete, Shanice Love created a major upset at the Frankfield Stadium, when she produced another massive throw of 54.72m to cop the High School Girls Discus Title in a new Penn Relays Record. Her mark surpassed Gleneve Grange’s (formerly of Holmwood Tech) 2013 mark of 54.29m.
Second place went to topped ranked USA athlete Elena Bruckner with a best distance of 54.44m. Hydel’s Devia Brown finished third with 48.34m. The other Jamaican athlete in the field, Shyleeden Smith of Petersfield High, finished fifteenth with 41.37m.
In the college women section, Isheka Binns of UWI Mona was second with 50.86m, with teammate Venique Harris fifth with 48.08M. The event was won by Florida State’s Sasha Lebert 51.44m.
St Jago’s Tissana Hickling made amends for what was a disappointing opening day on the track for her team by winning the High school girls Long Jump Championship Finals with 5.86m.
“It was not great weather to compete in, but I was able to stay focused and win my event. My mother and my coach were my motivations for this win today,” Hickling quoted as saying by Penns Relay reporters.
Taishia Pryce St. Andrew Tech 5.46m, Annia Ashley Edwin Allen 5.46m, Telecia Briscoe Edwin Allen 5.35m and Monief Heslop Camperdown 5.12m finished in fourth, fifth, eight and fourteenth respectively.
Jessica Noble, representing the University of Technology, had an effort of 5.41m which was only good enough for 10th place in the College Women’s Long Jump Championship final.
In the Girls Triple Jump Championship final, St Jago’s Jodian Petrie leapt 11.97m for second behind winner Veronika Karpenko State College 12.02m. Hydel’s Samara Spencer Catherine, was fifth best with 11.86m.
In the Girls Shot put Finals, St Jago’s Janell Fullerton threw 14.19 for fourth place, behind winner Alyssa Wilson of Donavan Catholic with 15.71m. Excelsior pair of Latavia Smith 13.39m and Tavia Dixon 12.50m were fifth and fourteenth respectively. Immaculate’s Kadian Clarke was 18th best with 11.47m.
Utech’s Geneva Greaves did 14.47m for fourth in the College women’s Shot Put final.
The early morning track action saw Edwin Allen’s Shannon Kalawan finishing second in the High School girls 400m hurdles with a time of 58.80 seconds. The event was won by Anna Cockrell of Providence Day in 57.38seconds. St Andrews Tech Linesha Thompson was 17th 1:06.26 seconds.
In the College Women section UWI Mona’s Rushell Clayton was third best overall with 57.01 seconds. UTech’s Candice McLeod finished her race in second with 1:01.89 to finished sixteenth overall.
It was a good day for Holmwood Technical and Edwin Allen High with all three of their teams advancing to the 4x 800m, 4x400m and 4x100m Championship of America finals.
Holmwood Technical was fastest in the sprint relays with 45.64 seconds to win their heat. Edwin Allen also won their heat in 45.79 seconds. Excelsior High 46.55 seconds, Green Island 47.18 seconds, and St Catherine 47.08 seconds all made progress to the Championship Final.
St Jago high suffered a mishap on the third baton exchange and finished at the back of the field in 1:06.80 seconds.
In the College women event, GC Foster, UTech and UWI were all no shows for that event.
Holmwood Technical ran 9:15.15 seconds to finished second to Penn Wood 9:12.07 seconds, in heat one of the 4x800m relay. Vere Technical’s 9:19.89 seconds and Spalding High’s 9:24.86 seconds finished first and second respectively in heat two, but both failed to advance to the Championship of America Final.
Edwin Allen produced 9:12.65 to finish third in their heat, but advanced as the fastest Jamaican team to the final. Western Branch and Shenendowa were the fastest qualifiers with 9:10. 39 seconds and 9: 11.03 seconds respectively.
The 4x400m relays Championship of American final for High school will feature Holmwood Technical who won their heat with the second fastest time of 3:46.58 seconds. Bullis School was the top qualifier in 3:46.31 seconds.
Edwin Allen also made progress by winning their heat in 3:48.07 seconds. St Elizabeth Technical had to dig deep to finish third in their heat in 3:50.19 seconds and barely made it into the finals.
In the College women division UTech made progress to that final in 3:37.79 seconds. UWI Mona was however outside the top eight, finishing 23rd overall with 3:50.66 seconds. The top team from qualifying was Oregon with 3:36.66 seconds.
The championship of American relays finals for females will take place tomorrow and the males will take to the track for their qualifying events.
