EDWIN ALLEN DEFENDS CHAMPIONSHIP OF AMERICA TITLES AT PENNS

It was all celebration and jubilation for the team out of Frankfield, Clarendon – Edwin Allen High – who was in spanking form on the second day of the 122th edition of Penn Relays Carnival at Franklin Field Stadium, Philadelphia on Friday. The Michael Dyke coached ladies defended their Championships of Americas titles in the 4x100m and 4x400m in commanding fashion. It was the third straight title for the 2016 Girls Champions at Penn Relays.

The team of Kasheika Cameron, Patrice Moody, Shellece Clark, Khamoy Farquharson ran a pretty fast 45.73 seconds to hold off the challenge from runners up St Catherine High who ran the quartet of Cishannie Williams, Julien Alfred, Annakay Maitland and Shian Hyde in 46.11 seconds.

Third place went to Nansemond River in 46.26 seconds. The preliminary round fastest qualifiers Holmwood Technical, suffered a mishap on their first exchange and was relegated to fifth in 46.68 seconds. Green Island was sixth in 47.67 seconds, as Excelsior High school failed to finish the race.

Camperdown High won the small schools consolation final, running 46.98 seconds with the team of Aaliyah Williams, Shannell Hibbert, Trishawna Crawford and Rushelle Burton. Manchester High ran 47.62 for fourth spot in that race.

Despite not coming in as most pundits pick for gold, Edwin Allen was determine to defend their 4x400m relay title and with a masterful display by third leg runner Shannon Kalawan coupled with a fall by Holmwood Technical anchor Ashley Williams, they secured the crown in a nippy 3:40.88 seconds.

The team from Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth Technical, had a brilliant final leg courtesy of Junelle Broomfield, but was not able to catch Edwin Allen’s anchor leg runner Patrice Moody. They crossed the line in 3:41.17 seconds, followed Union Catholic with star athlete Sydney Marshall bringing them home in third 3:42.59 seconds. Holmwood Technical crossed the line eighth in 4:03.74 seconds.

Entering the day with a mission to conquer in all three Championship finals, Edwin Allen ran out of gas in the 4x800m which went to Shenendehowa who won in 9:00.79 seconds. The Clarendon unit faded to fifth in 9:03.20 seconds. The defending champions Holmwood Technical (9:01.76) fought gallantly on the anchor leg and narrowly missed the second spot to one of the event favourites, Mamaroneck (9:01.69).

University of Technology (UTech) made progress to the College Men and Women 4x200m Championship races. The team of Travane Morrison, Twayne Crooks, Tajay Gayle, and Rohan Cole ran 1:25.13 to win their heat and qualify second fastest of all teams.

The team of Christania Williams, Janieve Russell, Shimayra Williams and Shericka Jackson ran 1:34.92 to also win their heat and qualify second best of all nine teams.

GC Foster quartet of Keagan Campbell, Remish Gaye, Nascieve Powell and Alvin Green were the only local team into the College Men 4x400m Championship final after clocking 3:09.33 seconds to finish second in heat one. UTech ran 3:11.59 to finish 6th in their heat and failed to advance to the final.

The UTech team had better fortunes in the College Men and Women 100m races, with Shimayra Williams 11.74 and Ajamu Graham 10.57 are into the their respective finals.

GC Foster’s Andre Clarke 51.44, UTech’s Marvin Williams 51.74 and GC Foster’s Marzel Miller 52.57 seconds finished second, third and fourth respectively in the College Men 400m Hurdles Championship race. The race was won by Jussi Kanervo of South Carolina in 50.54 seconds.

Five boys team, St. Elizabeth Tech (7:49.14), St. Jago (7:48.21), Bellefield (7:53.43), Jamaica College (7:53.32) and Kingston College (7:50.65) all advanced to the 4x800m Championship of America.

The 4x100m saw Jamaica College qualifying fastest for the Championship Final with a time of 40.87 seconds. They are joined in the final by T.C. Williams (40.91), Kingston College (41.05 ) , St. Jago (41.33 ) St. Elizabeth Tech (41.35 ), Calabar ( 41.47 ) and Excelsior (42.09).

Munro College won the High School Boys Discus Championship final through Kino Dunkley who threw 57.89m. Kevin Nedrick Petersfield was fourth with 55.35m with Munro College Vikarie Elliott seventh with 51.98m. Andre Garvey of Excelsior (48.98m) and Daniel Cope of Petersfield (44.94m) were 10th and 13th respectively.

UWI Mona had runner up finishes in the College throwing events with Basil Bingham producing 53.89m in the Discus and Fedrick Dacres 18.53m in the Shot Put Final.

In the Boys equivalent Calabar’s Warren Barrett threw 20.00m for second ahead of Jamaica College’s Vashon McCarthy19.43m and Petersfield’s Sanjay Lawrence fourth with 19.21m.
