The University of the West Indies FC will continue their most unlikely push for a spot in the semi-finals of the Red Stripe Premier League when they host struggling Cavalier SC at the UWI Bowl at 3:30pm on Sunday. Currently in 4th place on 42 points, one more than 5th place Humble Lion FC, no one would have expected the newcomers to the league to be in such a good position after their inauspicious start to the league.
Thrashed 4-0 by the defending champions Arnett Gardens in the first live Monday Night game of the season, the Marcel Gayle coached team has bounced back in some style and got sweet revenge for that opening day loss last week, when they tagged the Jerome Waite coached team 2-0 at UWI.
Ironically, UWI has been led in scoring by former Cavalier striker Girvon Brown who was traded at the start of the season. Brown took some time to get acquainted with his new teammates but has since gone on to bag 12 goals to date, which represents exactly half of what Cavalier has been able to amass as a team, all season. Brown has been in fine form recently and was among the scorers last week when UWI defeated Arnett Gardens.
The massive boost in confidence should be reflected in the play of the UWI team that has been dreaming of a final four spot since the start of the third round. Having beaten and drawn with Cavalier already this season, the UWI should approach the game with no fear against a team that on average is scoring less than a goal a game in the 30 matches played to date.
Cavalier’s best player, Chevone Marsh, was called up to the Reggae Boyz squad for World Cup qualification on Wednesday and will be unavailable as Jamaica travels to play Costa Rica in the return game on Tuesday. Rudolph Speid will need the rest of his squad to come good as they try to move away from the dreaded relegation zone.
Uncomfortably placed in 9th position on 33 points, just three above the relegation zone, the entire Cavalier organization will be hoping for three points which, on Sunday, would go a long way in securing premier league survival.
