Excelsior strong woman Shanice Love lived up to expectations by copping the Class One Girls Discus gold medal in a new event record of 52.73m on the second day of the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Track and Field Championships at the National Stadium on Wednesday. She finished ahead of Hydel’s Devia Brown 42.76m and Tracey-Ann Simms of St. Jago High 41.52m. Love’s first two attempts in her final sequence were registered as foul throws, but she held her nerves, propelling the Discus out to the new mark, to close her ‘Champs’ career in fine style. The previous record of 51.15m was held by Edwin Allen’s Tara Sue Barnett in 2013.
“I was a bit nervous in the first two throws, then I decided that I was never gonna let the finals miss me, so I kept my nerves and ensured I got a mark and made it in to the top eight throwers.And I came out as the winners. Now I look to the Carfita Games where am looking to break the National Junior Record. Then it’s time to move on to college after that,” an elated Love explained to Yardie Sports.
St Jago High’s Thaleetio Green closed the day\s proceeding with a bang when he ran away with the Boys Steeplechase, crossing the line in a new record of 5:53.14 seconds. Garfield Gordon of Mavis Bank High in 5:56.73 seconds, was second and Kingston College’s Shane Bucchanan, who took a tumble at the final barrier, still managed to finish third in 5:59.11 seconds.
The previous record of 5.59.77 seconds was set by Holmwood Technical’s Obrian Firth in 2014.
Other winners on the day were Jamaica College’s Obrien Wasome who defended his Class One Long Jump title with a winning mark of 7.50m ahead of St Jago’s Shawn D Thompson 7.27m and Kingston College’ Shammari Wellington 7.23m finishing third.
Wolmer’s Girls Akio Jones (15.13m) sprang a surprise on the field to winning the Class Two Shot Put Final ahead of Vere Technical’s Avery Pryce Vere (13.76m) and Buff Bay’s Ashtina Dobson (13.39m).
Kingston College’s Yashawn Hamilton won the Class Two Boys Long Jump final with a leap of 7.01m ahead of Excelsior’s Joel Morgan 6.95m and Calabar High’s Kristoffe Clifford 6.87m. Jamaica College’s pair of Safin Williams 6.80m (4th) and Micah Wellington 6.67m (5th) both finished outside of the medals.
The Girls Steeplechase Open final was won by Edwin Allen’s Teresha Jacobs 7:07.86 seconds ahead of her teammate Jeima Davis 7:19.10 seconds and Vere Technical Alithia Fearon 7:21.62 seconds.
The leaders on the Girls Championship after three finals scored sees Hydel High 21 points and Kingston College leads the boys with 32 points.
