The sprinters all came out to warm up their engines on Day 2 of the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships in an afternoon packed with exciting 200m and sprint relay qualifying action. The results stayed true to the script with most of the top names advancing to the second round of the 200m. In Class Four, Hydel’s Gabrielle Matthews (24.95s) led all qualifiers into the next round of the Girls 200m Meter Class Four. Edwin Allen pair of Bethany Bridge (25.09s) and Salieci Myles (25.34s) also made easy progression to the quarterfinals.
The fastest qualifier in the Girls 200m Class Three came from Vere Technical Britany Anderson (24.40s), ahead of Edwin Allen’s Kevona Davis ( 24.61s), Hydel Ashanti Moore (24.72s), St Jago’s Joanne Reid (24.79s) and rounding out the top five was Holmwood Technical’s Dynadra Gray (24.93s). Calabar Christopher Taylor ran 21.13 seconds to be the fastest qualifier, with teammate Dejour Russell 21.14 seconds. The top five was rounded out with St Jago’s Javad Black 22.12seconds, Jamaica College’s Chislon Gordon 22.16seconds and Kingston College’s Yashawn Hamilton 22.17seconds.
St. Elizabeth Technical Nigel Ellis captured his heat in 21.24 seconds to lead qualifiers into the next round. The top five qualifiers is completed by Kingston College Tyereke Bryan 21.33 seconds, Jamaica College Micheal Campbell 21.35 seconds, Excelsior High’s Andel Miller 21.37s and Calabar’s Xavior Angus 21. 39 seconds.
Action from the 800m qualifying saw Chrissanni May Holmwood Tech 2:15.31,.Britnie Dixon Vere 2:17.51s, Brittney Campbell Holm Tech 2:17.90s, Kimone Campbell Spalding 2:18.15s and .Shanique Masters Hydel 2:15.60s all made easy passage to the Girls Class Two event.
The Class Three Girls equivalent saw event favourite Edwin Allen’s Cermore Donald leading the pack with 2:16.91 seconds in heat one. Her teammate Kayan Green won heat five in 2:19.17 seconds. Heat four went to Delverna Bromfield Holmwood Tech 2:20.48 and heat three was won by Abigail Schaffe St Mary 2:23.93 seconds. The five qualifiers is completed by Britney Brown Manchester 2:24.14 seconds.
Calabar dropped valuable points in the Class Three Boys 800m as pre-event favourite Kevroy Venson finished last in heat one in a pedestrian 2:13.66 seconds. Rivaldo Marshall was sixth in heat four in 2:13.40 seconds.
The top qualifiers were St Jago Jevanna Edwards (2:06.23s), Kingston College’s Shanthamoi Brown 2:06.51 seconds Donald Quarrie High Jordon Anderson (2:08.44s), Jamaica College’s Malik Rickets (2:08.85s) and St. Elizabeth Technical’s David Martin ( 2:06.41s).
The top five qualifiers in the Boys class one 800m were Rojay Granston Holm Tech 1:55.29sm Leon Clarke St Jago 1:55.30 seconds, Nathan Brown Excelsior 1:55.80 seconds, Shevan Parks Bellefield 1:56.09seconds and Juavaney James STETHS 1:56.79 seconds.
Immaculate Conception High’s Kadian Clarke Girls threw 12.3m lead the qualifying pool for the Girls Shot Put Class One ahead of Janell Fullerton St Jago 12.12 and Georgetta Samuels Holm Tech 11.89m.
Shannon Kalawan Edwin Allen 58. 33s, Nicolee Foster Holm Tech 58.64s and Shian Salmon Hydel 58.70s were the quickest of the eight finalist through to the girls 400m hurdles open final.
The Boys equivalent saw top qualifier out of Edwin Allen’s Rayan Holmes 52.01 seconds, ahead of St Jago’s Timor Barrett 52.75, Kingston College’s Sherwayne Allen 53.06 seconds and St. Elizabeth Technical’s Juavaney James 52.40 seconds.
The Girls sprint relay started with disappointed for Edwin Allen in the Class four , where the team failed to execute a safe exchange on the anchor leg.
In the Class Two Girls event it was Edwin Allen High 45.70 seconds Holmwood Technical 45.99 seconds and St Jago High 45.90 seconds all advanced to the final.
St. Catherine High 46.15 seconds and St. Jago High 46.60seconds lead the top eight into the Girls Class Three final, which includes Hydel, Edwin Allen and Holmwood Technical High.
In the Girls Class One preliminary Holmwood Technical High 45.13 seconds ahead of Edwin Allen High 45.24 seconds and St. 45.37 seconds finished best of all eight qualifiers.
The Boys Class final is now poised to be a cracker, with Kingston College signaling their intentions with a blistering 39.98 seconds clocking to secure the fastest time heading into the final. Jamaica College 40.20 seconds, Calabar High 40.17 seconds and St. Elizabeth Technical 40.44seconds are into Saturday final.
The top class Two and Three Boys equivalent are Calabar High 41.23seconds and St. Elizabeth Technical 43.44 seconds respectively.
Day Three Action gets on the way at 8:15 Thursday morning with the continuation of the Decathlon Open for Boys.
