On paper both Holmwood Technical sprint hurdlers, Nicolee Foster and Gabriella McDonald are among the contenders for the top prizes in their event at the upcoming ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships in March.

Both are diminutive in physique, but they didn’t come up short, as the duo finished one-two in the Class One Girls 100m hurdles final at the Youngster Goldsmith Classics.

McDonald won in a time of 13.94 seconds with Foster crossing the line in 14.01 seconds. They managed to defeat a quality field with the likes of St Jago’s Andrenette Knight, Camperdown’s Rushell Burton, Wolmerian Janeek Brown and Excelsior’s Renee Shaw.

The reaction was similar for both ladies coming across the finish line, McDonald was all smiles and bursting with joy, signalling a satisfactory execution of the race.

“I am happy” McDonald said “First of all big up God. I went out there and I remember what the coach said, that is to attack attack from the start, straight to the finish line. I did that and I got the win.“

It was a jubilant Foster who expressed gratitude for a good season so far, when compared to last year.

“I am thankful for my final run. I am injury free so I give God thanks. I have been working hard since September and its paying off. My Coach is also there and is motivating me,” Foster explained.

Both athletes are looking to secure maximum points for their school, and will be approaching Champs with a high degree of confidence, but not getting ahead of themselves.

“I am very confident in myself, but over confidence blinds real results,” Foster, who will be also campaigning over the 400m hurdles as well, noted.

McDonald beaming with confidence, is eyeing a big performance by herself and her teammate, as they seek to return the Christiana based institution to Girls Champs supremacy.

“We can, we will, we must – Holmwood Technical straight,” was the message being echoed by McDonald.

Looking beyond Champs, the pair is seeking to emulate the achievements of their former teammate, 2013 World Youth Champion Yanique Thompson, should they make the team to the upcoming World Junior Championship.

Inspired by the achievement and the performance of reigning World Champion, Danielle Williams, the two are mindful of all that it takes to live their dreams.

“We can go far and achieve anything that we want. Hard work pays off.” A sentiment that both athletes share.
