Former Holmwood Technical stand out Gleneve Grange’s National Junior Discus record of 54.29m and former Edwin Allen athlete Tara Sue Barnett’s record for Class One Girls, 51.15m, are in jeopardy. The Excelsior talent, Shanice Love, is looking to take down both marks and etch her name in the record books.

Since 2012 the record has switched hands, moving from St Jago Alumni Kellion Knibb (2012) to Bennett (2013) and then Grange (2014).

Love however wants to ensure that after champs 2016 the mark that she will set is out of reach for years to come.

“The specific goal for Champs is and remains to be the National Junior and Champs Class One record holder. The mark of 54.29 is what am looking at and wanting to extend it to a mark that will not be beaten in years to come”.

Love hurled the discus to a new personal best of 51.92m to win at the Youngster Goldsmith Classics, a mark that exceeds the present Champs mark. She is the early leader in the Digicel Grand Prix Series and intends to stay ahead to the end.

“For my event, the Discus, once I remain focused and execute I should win this series and definitely show up big at Champs,” a confident Love said.

Looking beyond champs, Love spoke highly of becoming the first junior and Jamaican female, to win a global discus medal for Jamaica.

“I want to be the first Jamaican female to do what the guys have done and are doing at the international level. That is my aim, especially if I make the World Junior Championship team. But I know it will take a lot of work”

Love is also backing her team to break into the top five on the girls side at Champs 2016.

“The girls definitely have a good chance to break into the top five this year. Once they have the mind-set and are determined to train and give their best. But everyone should know that Excelsior High School is the one to watch at Champs this year.”
