Sixteen year old Moniefa Green of Hydel High school is looking to fully establish herself as one of the country’s top junior middle distance talents, after posting a number of good results in the development meets so far this season.

Speaking with Yardie Sports after her campaign at the Youngsters Goldsmith Classics, Green was filled with smiles, relaxed and happy with her day’s efforts – a victory in the 1500m and second in the steeplechase open event.

“I am satisfied with my day’s performance, especially my first steeplechase for the season. My coach told me that I could run 7:30.00 seconds and I ran 7:22.29 seconds. I wasn’t really ready for the 1500m, but after the race started I realised that the pace was kinda slow, so I went out and decided to take over and push the pace and I came out victorious.” Green continued.

The Steeplechase was won by Edwin Allen’s Teresha Jacobs in a time of 7:14.19 seconds.

Assessing her 1500m run, her preferred event, Green expressed surprise and increased confidence after winning in 4: 42.26 seconds, outclassing Vere Technical’s Britnie Dixion 4:42.46 seconds and Holmwood Technical’s Chrisanni May 4:51.95 seconds. This has lifted her confidence and she now believes this person can be repeated at Champs in under a month.

“This victory has built my confidence and I am gonna train harder and hope to repeat my performance at champs, as I look to win two gold medals.”

Hydel did exceptionally well to finish second in the Girls section of last year;s championships and she is looking for them to go one step better in 2016.

“My team is training hard and I am confident that we can win or at least retain our second place” she noted.

Having tasted national representation last year, as a member of the team to the NACAC Championship in Columbia, Green is looking once again to secure a spot on another national team to this year’s Carifta Games.

“I am looking forward to the Carita Games I know that the competition there is much higher, but I am determined and focused, knowing I can do it. When I run I don’t think about the other competitors, I focus on myself and give my best,” Green explained.

She hopes other young teammates and other athletes will find a philosophy similar to hers. One in which self belief and discipline are paramount.

“My achievements in track and field are because of me always listening to my coach, motivating myself and believing in my abilities. My family, teammates and God has been my source of motivation as well” the senior Hydel athlete noted.
