Nicknamed the Jamaican ‘Allyson Felix’, due to her similar physique, running style and participating in the same events, Holmwood Technical’s 400m specialist Ashley Williams is among the podium prospects heading to the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships in March
.
The quiet spoken Williams is not often seen in a big groups, but she’s always there when duty demands her. She won the Class One Girls 400m final at last Saturday’s staging of the Youngsters Goldsmith meet, in a fast 53.99s.

“I am very comfortable with what I did today, because what I did was somewhat expected of me. Despite some areas that need fixing am still not worried. I have like about two weeks to fix it because Champs is not far away” she told Yardie Sports.

Williams also expressed satisfaction with her training and season’s progress in the build up to the championships.

“At training everything is where it’s supposed to be. I don’t have any injuries or anything. I am completing my program as expected, so training is going pretty fine for me”.

Williams is the bronze medalist from the 2015 championship, where she finished behind Camperdown’s Dawna-Lee Loney and Papine’s Tiffany James. Both athletes subsequently left high school, and as such Williams is optimistic and is expressing confidence in her ability to cop the gold medal in her second year in Class One.

“This year for the 400m, I know that I am supposed to win, but even if I fall short and I don’t win, I am confident of a medal. Being a second year Class One girl, I am motivated knowing that I have the talent to go and win the 400m”.

The Holmwood star also reveal that her Champs career will wind down this year, and siting her ineligible for competing at either the Carifta or World Juniors Championship, she will leave it all on the track in Holmwood Technical’s quest for title chase number eleven.

“I don’t have the age for either the Carifta or the World juniors. I went on my first junior national representation at last years Pan Am Games in Edmonton Canada.

It means therefore that Ashley Williams will be playing a big part this year, both as an individual and also being a part of the 4x100m team.

“We won that event at the Central Hurdles and Relays in record time. And also my 4x400m team is where we are supposed to be” she noted.

Inspired and motivated by the fighting spirit of her track hero Alyson Felix, Williams is ready to give of her best for her team as she closes out her junior career.

“A lot of persons including my doctor calls me Felix and they say I resemble her especially my body size. I in fact admire her abilities and her talent and we both do the same events (400m & 200m), so that’s my external motivation, to be like her at Champs 2016”.
