He may be unsure of what his schedule will be like at the upcoming ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships, but Kingston College’s Jhevaughn Matherson is keen to seize the chance to test himself against the best Class One sprinters after recovering from an injury that took him out during the Championships last year in his final year at Class Two..
“I am not a doctor or a physio, but I feel I am over my injuries. I am feeling better. Thanks to the support of my team,” he explained.
Citing strength and conditioning as two of the main factors for the injury, he is now beyond that physically, but slowly crossing the hurdle mentally.
“It was all a bit disappointing but that’s a part of the sport. The main problem was strength last year, but I got stronger this year and speed comes with strength, so that’s how I dealt with it. Emotionally and mentally the guys are supporting me well. That is how we all handle it as a team.” he stated.
Things are really hotting up in Class One sprinting and a lot of persons are anticipating a lot of the 2014 Class Two 200m champion, but he is not allowing that to put undue pressure on his shoulders. The plans for Champs he explained, rest in the hands of his coach and supporting team, but he has already set a target for himself.
“The main expectation is nine points, after the nine points fast times will come. And that is nine points in one event,” he emphasised.
The defending Class Two 200m champion pulled up in the semi-final and took no further part in 2015.
In 2014 Matherson won the 200m in Class Two in 20.97s ahead of Raheem Chambers of St. Jago High 21.19s and Calabar’s Anthony Carpenter 21.57 seconds.
He also who placed second behind Chambers with a time of 10.37 seconds inthe 100m. He will likely match strides with these same rivals again at Champs 2016.
The Kingston College athlete always enjoy representing his country and as such, the upcoming Carifta Games and World Junior Championship are on his radar for the 2016 season.
“It is always a great pleasure to represent my country and that is one my main objectives for the season” Matherson noted.
For now however, the focus has to be on Champs and attempting to wrestle the title from rivals Calabar High.
