Two key games are on today in the Red Stripe Premier League. The resurgent Cavalier SC club will host the freefalling FC Reno at the Stadium East Field starting at 5:00pm while the struggling Waterhouse FC will host Montego Bay United at Drewsland starting at 6:00pm.
Cavalier SC ended 2015 with an amazing 4-4 draw with Waterhouse and has followed that up with two wins on the trot to begin the New Year. Those seven points have seen them head in the right direction away from the relegation zone, where their opponents today are desperately heading.
Cavalier did some good business in the transfer window bringing in the likes of Cleon Pryce and Aldine Grant, both of whom scored against Boys Town on January 3rd and this has revived thoughts of them making the final four despite being in only 8th position in the league.
Reno on the other hand has had a miserable time of it recently, picking up a single point from their last five games and appear set to be involved in a relegation scrap just like they did last season. Goal scoring has been a main issue at the club and they will need to find a goal scorer during the transfer window if they are to keep hopes alive of remaining in the top flight.
In the days other game, shock cellar dwellers Waterhouse have the mammoth task of containing Montego Bay United with the league’s leading goal scorer, Dino Williams. Waterhouse goes into the game without their first choice central defensive pair of Nicholy Finlayson who is out through injury and Rohan Amos who misses a game after picking up two yellow cards during the 1-1 draw against Boys Town on Sunday.
While Waterhouse picked up a point on Sunday, it was not enough for a team that has propped up the league for several weeks now. Maximum points must be on the agenda every time they take the field of play but it will be a tough task against a Montego Bay United team, whose stinging 2-1 loss to defending champions Arnett Gardens on Sunday will still be fresh on their minds.
Owayne Gordon along with Williams will be looking to propel Mobay United back to the top of the league, if only temporarily with a win at Drewsland, but Waterhouse needs three points to draw level with 10th place Tivoli Gardens who do not play until tomorrow. Kevin Lamey started for Waterhouse for the first time in three years on Sunday and while he failed to get on the score sheet, provided enough assists for his teammates to have won the game at the Barbican Field.
Both teams need three points for opposing reasons and the fans are expected to pack the stands for what could prove to be a cracker of a game with so much at stake.
