Just like he did when he was a student at the University of the West Indies, Anthony Grant plans to bring goals to the UWI FC as he is set to return to the club for a short stint, while he takes a break from playing for the Richmond Kickers in the United Soccer League (USL), in the United States.

The 26 year old who has been in the island for a while now, has been training with the team and is ready to get going when the Red Stripe Premier League resumes on Sunday January 3rd, 2016.

Grant told Yardie Sports, “I will be here until late February and I am hoping to bring goals to the team. The last time I wore the red and white I scored 19 goals from 19 games so when I get my chance to play I am aiming to at least maintain that scoring rate.”

UWI has done well in their debut season in the nation’s top flight and are currently in 8th place on 22 points, in the 12 team league. However with a minus 8 goal difference facing the UWI, Grant could not have arrived at a better time to help the Marcel Gayle coached team correct that situation as they bid to achieve objective number one – remain in the league.

The former Irvinite footballer has watched the progress of the team from a far and is quite pleased with the overall progress over a few short years.

“It is a great achievement, to know we were playing in the Syd Bartlett (competition) a few years ago and now we have progressed through the Major League and Super League to be playing at the highest level right now.

“But the team has goal scoring issues and that is where I come in. It will be very exciting to lace up my boots and play in a competitive game for UWI again but I just want to have fun, score goals and stay sharp until it is time to return to the USL,” he stated.

Grant played for the Seacost United Phantoms in the PDL scoring 12 goals from 12 games before moving up to the USL where he joined the Kickers, but he is yet to get off the mark at his new club.

“I joined the club in late August and got a few minutes at the back end of the season. I have not scored any goals yet but playing in the RSPL will keep me sharp and I intend to hit the ground running when I get back to the States for pre-season training.”

For now however, the focus for Grant is to get among the goals for his beloved UWI and help them push through a congested mid-table in the Red Stripe Premier League. Should he receive his international clearance this week, Grant could make his UWI RSPL debut as early as Sunday against Humble Lion FC.
