Denham Town dump Innswood from Manning Cup

Denham Town High,Innswood High,ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup,

The team that advances to the semifinals of the ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup from Group I could well be decided in the boardroom, after Denham Town High school did themselves a world of good when they clipped Innswood High 1-0 in the first game of a double header at the Constant Spring Field yesterday.

The wide open group at the start of the day, gave all four teams something to play for and Innswood started their game with enough energy and application to suggest that they wanted it more than Denham Town.

The Denham Town goalkeeper, Brian Bennett, was called into action from the 5th minute of play when he pulled of a stunning save to deny Milton Walford from close range.

Bennett was at it again, tipping round the post, an effort from Akim Gibbons, after the winger had been played in down the left channel by Dujaughn Powell.

Innswood High continued to pile on the pressure and when Steve Harris got by his marker inside the box following a slip by the defender, Bennett had to provide yet another block at the near post, supported by a strong boot from his teammate to clear the danger.

But Denham Town slowly grew in the game and soon it was the turn of the Inswood goalkeeper Tajah Griffiths, to be keeping out the shots. A curling free kick from Daquan ‘Spudy’ Black was spilled by the custodian but the danger was averted when his teammate booted clear for a corner kick.

Shortly after, it was the width of the crossbar that denied Denham Town the lead, as a header from Tarrique Campbell rebounded into play.

The half ended 0-0 with both teams still having all to play for.

The second half produced less action than the first, as the wet and muddy conditions took a toll on the players’ legs but Campbell should have put Denham Town ahead when substitute Orlando Brown laid it on a platter for him. But Campbell somehow managed to spoon his effort from only eight yards with the goal gaping.

Denham Town kept pushing and Brown showed his strength to hold off his marker before wrong footing Griffiths and slipping the ball into an empty net, for a deserved 1-0 lead.

Brown could have made the game safe when he came face to face with Griffiths again, but this time the keeper blocked the shot to keep Inswood in the contest.

It would prove to be an effort in futility as Inswood failed to produce anything worthwhile on the attacking front and Denham Town managed to secure the three points and remain in the hunt for a semi-final spot.
