UWI gain valuable point at Cavalier but still remain bottom of RSPL

UWI FC,Cavalier SC,Red Stripe Premier League,

The ever improving UWI FC put in a good performance against Cavalier SC at the Stadium East field on Sunday, to grab a valuable point from a 0-0 draw in a game that could have gone either way with more clinical finishing from both sets of strikers.

Both teams missed chances in the first half with the easiest falling to former St. Georges College Manning Cup star Ryan Miller, but the header from the midfielder went straight into the ground and over the crossbar from six yards.

In a wide open game, both teams continued to create opportunities in the second half and former Cavalier striker Girvon Brown, who now plays for UWI, thought he had broken the deadlock; but his powerful strike came crashing back off the crossbar.

UWI continued to show why they are languishing at the foot of the table as indecision in the final third robbed them of converting at least three clear chances.

Meanwhile at the other end, Miller could have won the match for his team in the 90th minute but his side footed effort went wide of an empty goal.

UWI did create another chance in stoppage time but were left holding their collective heads as they had to settle for a point, their fourth of the season, with just about half of the first round completed.

A frank Cavalier coach Rudolph Speid said, “It’s not a good result for us at home, we should have done better. We do all the hard work every day. Our approach work is good, it’s just to score. It will eventually happen; we just have to keep working hard.”

UWI assistant coach Andrew Peart said “A point is better than none. In four games so far, we have picked up no points. Two games, including today, we have picked up at least a point, so that is good for the team and our objective which is to stay in the league. The more points we get, we will get closer to that target.

“The more we continue to avoid defeat, the team will get better.”

The result means Cavalier remains in sixth place on 8 points while UWI remains in last place but now tied on 4 points with Waterhouse who were thrashed 4-0 by Tivoli Gardens.
