A first half brace from national striker Dino Williams, his first goals of the new season, and a late strike from Owayne Gordon helped former Premier League champions, Montego Bay United, to a comfortable 3-0 win over Boys Town at the Barbican field on Sunday.
In what can be described as an efficient performance, Mobay United barely got out of second gear in a game that their goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett was forced to make only one save from a Boys Town attack that is in desperate need of inspiration.
Williams got his first goal with the game just eight minutes old when Donavan Carey played him down the left channel and he outpaced his marker before rounding the onrushing goalkeeper, Kirk Porter and sliding the ball home. Two Boys Town defenders tried to get back to cover but neither could stop the ball from crossing the line.
Mobay United captain Dwayne Ambusley and Jermaine Woozencroft controlled the pace of the game from midfield as the visiting team commanded the lion’s share of ball possession. From the little that Boy’s Town saw of the ball they very rarely threatened the Mobay goal. They were limited to wide long range efforts and the few crosses that came in, were easily plucked out of the air by Barrett.
Two minutes before the interval, Williams got his second. He received a pass from Carey just inside the box, controlled beautifully on his chest before turning and beating two defenders and firing past a hapless Porter. It was a brilliant piece of skill from the big man in a tight space.
It was more of the same on the resumption and Williams was left holding his head in the 54th minute when he missed and open goal from about eight yards.
A rare defensive gaffe from Mobay in the 64th let in Michael Blygen for Boys Town and the striker took a couple of touches before curling his shot on target, but he saw his effort cleared behind for a corner kick.
Rafiek Thomas brought out a flying save from Barrett in the 77th minute when the ball fell kindly to him and he let fly from the top of the box. The big keeper threw himself to his right, snatching the ball out of the air and maintained his team’s two goal lead.
The game was just about won when Gordon produced the goal of the game in the 87th minute. Breaking down the right side with a defender in hot pursuit, the striker produced a Christiano Ronaldo type skill to shift the ball from his right foot to his left, before powering the ball through a sea of players and past Porter to cap a fine evening for the Timothy Hankinson coached team.
It was the second win of the season for Mobay United who moved up to sixth place on 6 points. They still have a game in hand due to their CONCACAF Champions League commitments last week.
“I know that everyone’s a bit surprised and think our heads are down because of the 3-3 (draw) against DC (United) in Champions League, but we gained a lot of confidence from that. We learned a lot about how to close out a game, but we also showed that we can play some great football as we did in the first half.
“So all week long we just have been anxious to get to another game to put it back on the park. We did from the opening whistle and were able to close the deal tonight with no goals against so we have accomplished a lot this week and hope to carry on,” Hankinson said.
Boys Town coach Andrew Price is preparing for yet another tough season.
“With a young team they are going to have to learn and the only way they are going to learn is out there on the park. The senior players are going to have to lead them and carry them.
“We are going to continue to work hard. Our season started very late. It was affected by a lot of the players being overseas, a lot of them playing business house football…it’s a learning experience, it’s a deep curve but we are gonna have to learn.”
Mobay United will take on third placed Cavalier SC in their rescheduled game on Wednesday.
