Week three of an already very interesting Red Stripe Premier League season, will be highlighted by the first Collie Smith Drive derby of the season. Third place and defending champions Arnett Gardens hosts sixth place Boys Town at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex at 6:00pm today, in what is the last game on Sunday.
Arnett had a comfortable 3-0 opening day win against newbies the UWI on match day one, but were stunned 1-0 by Cavalier on Monday night and will want to return to winning ways in a hurry. Boys Town has drawn their first two games and will be looking for their first win which would represent their best start to the season in years.
Both clubs enjoy massive home support and the Boys Town faithful are expected to make the short trip up Collie Smith Drive for this key encounter.
Shock leaders and newly promoted Portmore United is the only team to have taken maximum points from two games so far this season and travel to Drewsland for what is expected to be a cracking encounter starting at 4:00pm.
Waterhouse have a new coach in Calvert Fitzgerald and they have a single point from their opening day fixture. Their game last weekend against FC Reno was rained out. This will be the first home game of the season for Fitzgerald and his team, so they will be looking to start well in front of a very critical home crowd.
Portmore clearly hold no fear on their return to top flight football after one season away and are expected to approach the game as if three points are theirs for the taking. This game has all the hallmarks of an instant classic.
Second from bottom Rivoli United on one point, hosts bottom placed UWI who have yet to secure a point, at the Prison Oval in the other 4 o’clock encounter. Rivoli will be looking for a confidence boosting win to climb out of the relegation zone while the UWI will be looking for their first point ever, in top flight football. This game could go either way, but the home team should start as favourites.
The day’s other game is the early match between 8th place Tivoli Gardens on two points and 10th place Humble Lion on one point at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex starting at 3:30pm.
A draw and a loss is a far cry from what was expected from the team that finished the season strongest last term and just missed out on a spot in the RSPL final, but Humble Lion will be looking to get their first win of the season from a Tivoli team that is in transition with a new coach in Christopher Bender and coping with the loss of some key players to other clubs in the off-season.
Jermaine ‘Teddy’ Johnson who has returned to his old club is expected to lead his team to a much better performance this term but was red-carded against Boys Town last week and misses today’s game. The former Reggae Boy has since apologized for his actions but this will be of no help to his team that needs all hands on deck to push up the tables.
The game between Montego Bay United and Cavalier SC has been postponed due to the CONCACAF Champions League commitments of Mobay United on Tuesday week.
The Monday night encounter sees 6th place Harbour View hosting 4th place FC Reno at the Harbour View Stadium starting at 8:30pm. Harbour View has two points from as many draws this season but a win could catapult them into the top four. FC Reno has enjoyed a good start to their season and will look to build on their early form despite the long trip from Westmoreland.
