SHAW, BLAKE OBLIGED ON DAY ONE OF JAAA NATIONAL JUNIOR TRIALS

Day One Recap- JAAA National Junior Trials 2015

As the saying, goes ‘expecting too much, can lead to so much disappointment”. That was the general consensus among the handful of spectators and supporters who turned out on day one of the JAAA, National Junior Championships 2015 at the National Stadium.

Marred by the absence of some of the countries more notable junior track and field athletes, long delays and limited competitors, there was not much to be in great anticipation of , but those who came on the day, delivered as was expected.

Leading the pack was the prodigious Christopher Taylor of Calabar, who made easy passage to the 400m finals without breaking much sweat. He won his heat in a modest 49.86 seconds. Joining him as expected for today’s showpiece is the man from Petersfield, Devaugh Ellington 49.54 seconds and Anthony Carpenter 49.98 seconds of Calabar, who secured the top two spots in heat one.

Ivan Henry of St Jago leads all qualifiers in the Boys U20 finals schedule for Sunday’s second day.

There were several National Junior/Youth champions that were crowned on day one. Kimone Shaw of St. Jago, in what was expected to be clash of previous Champs winners, easily won the Under 18 Girls, 100m finals in 11.81s, ahead of Vanesha Pusey of Green Island 11.97 s, with pre-race favourite Shellece Clarke of Edwin Allen finishing third.

The Boys equivalent was won by Calabar’s Xavier Angus in 10.79s, ahead of Andre Morrison of St Jago, 10.88s and St Catherine High Ashanie Smith, 10.95s.

The Girls Under 20 event saw a Holmwood Technical quinella, with Sasha Lee Forbes winning as expected in 11.71s. Teammate Ashley Williams, 11.86s and Green Island’s, Kimone Hines, 12.06 s rounded out the top three.

Shauna Helps of Wolmers Girls, who was expected to vie for top spot did not show up for the event.

Running in – 1.6m/s headwind, Zandre Blake outsprinted his competitors to win the Boys senior 100m in 10.46 seconds, ahead of Kingston College’s Shivannarine Smalling, 10.59 seconds and Hujaye Cornwall of STETHS, 10.67 seconds.

The 400m Hurdles was more like a warm up run for both female categories with both winners, having to battle a single competitor and the wind inside the stadium.

Junelle Bromfield of STETHS ran unchallenged, crossing the line in a creditable, 59.94 seconds ahead of Hydel’s Shian Salmon, 1:00.16 seconds.

It was the same for Shannon Kalawan of Edwin Allen winning the U20 in 1:01.57s ahead of Jonel Lacey 1:03.34s of Holmwood Technical.

The U-18 boy’s event was run as a straight final with the STETHS pair of Leonardo Ledgister 52.37 and Jauavney James 52.98 finishing ahead of Timor Barrette of St. Jago High.

The U20 final with a three man field, went according to the script with former world Youth Champion Marvin Williams of STETHS, 51.80 seconds securing top spot ahead of Zavier Lawrence of Calabar 54.47 seconds. The third competitor in the field failed to finish after stumbling while trying to clear hurdle number 7.

The distance event contested saw Albert Town High athlete, Kelly Ann Beckford, 5:03.21 s winning the U18, 1500m, with Daniel Glave of Holmwood Technical wining the combined Boys event in 4:02.00s.

The 3000 for U20 girls was won by lone competitor Crystal Brown of Mavis Bank High, with Shemar Salmon 15: 10. 54 seconds of STETHS winning the men’s 5000m event.

The field events were much the same, with long delays and limited competitors showing for the respective events.

The Javelin event for U20 Girls saw a lone competitor Ayesha Champagne of STATHS, having a best effort of 43.67 seconds. It was a Calabar top two in the Boy’s event with Najair Jackson propelling the javelin to new PB of 62.79m, ahead of Adrian Mitchell, 61.79m, also a new PB.

Kevin Nedrick of Petersfield High, won the Boys U18 event, also competing by himself in 61.41m. He had earlier won the Boys U18 Discuss finals with 54.70m, ahead of Munro’s College Andre Hendricks 51.82m and Kyle Mitchell of Wolmers Boy 49.41m.

The Girls U20 Discuss was won by Shanice Love of Excelsior 47.82m. In the U 18 equivalent, Devia Brown of Hydel won with 41.64m with Edwin Allen’s Demar Gayle 57.62m winning the Boys U20 finals.

The High jump U18 girl was won by Edwin Allen’s Annia Ashley, 1.68m with St Jago’s Lushane Wilson securing the boys equivalent with 2.05m.

Jessica Noble of UTECH won the Girls U20 long jump with a leap of 6.02m, ahead of Shanice Lewis of Edwin Allen with 5.99m. Jamaica College’s Obrien Wasome won the Boys event with 7.46 m ahead of Odaine Lewis of Cornwall College 7.35m.

Tamara Moncrieffe of Holmwood Technical, who suffered a slight scare on her third attempt in the Girl’s U20 long jump, returned to secure the Triple jump final with a modest 12.93m.
