Asafa Powell is back! The Jamaican sped to his 87th sub 10 clocking as he blistered 9.84 seconds to win the Men’s 100m at 12th staging the Jamaica International Invitational Meet (JIIIM).

In the absence of reigning sprint king Usain Bolt, the stadium crowd looked to the former world record holder to execute defeat on the American Ryan Bailey, for what they regarded as a disrespect to the Olympic Champion Usain Bolt, at last week’s World Relays in the Bahamas, and he did.

Powell, unlike Bailey, who greeted with boos from the crowd inside the stadium, was given a thunderous cheer as the stadium announcer introduced the athletes.

Powell got off to a decent start before changing gears pulled away from the field to record his fastest time since 2010. Bailey 9.93 and Powell’s former training partner Nesta Carter 9.98 finished second and third respectively.

It was smiles, ear to ear, as the athlete who now takes instruction from former sprinter and Brother Donovan Powell, took his victory strides along the grand stand, with fans trying to get a snap of the man who once made 100m his own.

Powell who was coming off a 10.08s season opener at a track meet last week in Guadeloupe, revealed to media personnel that he was pleased with his execution and hopes to give of his best in a final, which he has not been able to do on several occasion in the pass.

Jamaica’s best collegiate team, the University of Technology continued to make their mark when two of their male sprinters emerged with personal best times, Andrew Fisher 10. 01 seconds and Tyqendo Tracey 10.20 seconds for 4th and 7th place finishes.
