The Canadian based track club Flying Angels will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary in style this weekend, when they participate for the first time at the fifth staging of the Pure Water/Anthrick Sports Management Prep Schools Meet at the UWI/Usain Bolt Track at the University of the West Indies on Saturday May 9th starting at 8:30 am.
The club is headed by Jamaican born founder, Earl Letford, who has previously brought down members of his club to participate in other local meets including the annual Gibson-McCook Relays.
The group of 35 people which includes 18 athletes, three coaches, support staff and parents, arrived in the island on Thursday and are looking forward to the event.
“I was in the island for the Gibson-McCook Relays earlier this year and had initial discussions with the meet organizer, Mr. Ricky Martin. We didn’t have much time to ready ourselves and raise funds to come to the meet but we are anticipating a great event and the kids are looking forward to running on the UWI/Usain Bolt track,” Letford said.
“To be able to run on the same track that the legendary Usain Bolt trains on is a special honour for them.”
In addition to the events for the under-13 athletes, the Flying Angels have brought down some athletes to run in the invitational events in the under-15 category.
Ricky Martin of Anthrick Sports Management is happy to have the Flying Angels participate this year.
“When we began this meet five years ago, we envisioned it becoming an international event and we have been able to achieve that. We are hoping that the Flying Angels will find value in being here and not only that they will return, but that they will tell others so that the number of international teams participating at the meet will grow.”
The Flying Angels host their own yearly track meet in Canada that is attended by teams from the Bahamas, Jamaica, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and the United States.
The Flying Angels track club caters to all ages and another one of their members, Felicia George, will be participating in the Jamaica International Invitational Meet which is also being held on Saturday at the National Stadium beginning at 6:00pm. George finished sixth in the Women’s 100m hurdles at the London Olympic Games in 2012.
