Wasome denied by wind gauge at Queens-Grace Jackson Invitational

When Obrien Wasome leapt a distance of 16.12 metres at the Queens/Grace Jackson Invitational Meet in Kingston Jamaica on Saturday January 31st, 2015, he became the first Jamaican schoolboy to clear a distance of 16 metres in the triple jump.

Wasome was denied a place in the official record books however, due to the absence of a wind gauge which would have made his jump legal. With the track and field season set to kick into high gear in February, the possibility of records flying in the event is quite likely.

Yardie Sports caught up with Wasome after his amazing leap and the humble young man had a subtle warning for his competitors.

“It feels great,” he said of his jump. “Knowing it’s still early season and there is a lot more to come I am looking forward to a great season.”

His teammate and friend Clayton Brown also put in a creditable performance and he too has eyes on doing greater things this season.

“I am pleased with my performance today and I will continue to work hard to get even greater distances in the near future. I am definitely looking forward to champs.”

Brown had a jump of 2.07 to win the Class 1 Boys High Jump at the JC/Pure Water Invitational in early January, which became a new meet record and is clearly bang on form at the moment.

It will be hard for their main rivals to get close to them this year and this sets up the jumps quite nicely ahead of ‘Champs’, which is just under a month away.
