When Warren Barrett Jr. threw a distance of 54.84m to win the Boys Class 1 Discus at the Big Shots Throwers Meet at Excelsior High on Saturday January, he far exceeded his own expectations.

The sixth form student who transferred to Calabar High from Cornwall College at the start of the school year, upset event favourite Demar Gayle of Edwin Allen who he beat into third place. Eric Campbell, also of Calabar finished in second place with a distance of 52.53m while Gayle only managed 51.65m.

“I am very pleased with my performance,” a smiling Barrett said. “I know I have the ability to get it done, but I am not even really training for the discus yet and got the win so I am very pleased.”

The switch in schools came as a surprise to many but Barrett explained his decision to move on.

“I enjoyed my time at Cornwall, it was time well spent. But I want to improve in my throwing and I believe Calabar is the right place for me. They have the expertise and the know-how and I want to continue winning.”

Though only in his first year at Class 1, Barrett who was a double gold medal winner in his final year in Class 2 is expected to be a contender in both the discus and shot put at Champs 2015.
