Since the restructuring of their youth policy, the German Bundesliga has been growing steadily and has improved significantly over the past decade. The league has moved from being boring, slow and mechanical to an exciting attacking brand of football that is entertaining the football world. The rise of the German top flight has seen it now having four Champions League spots since the start of the 2012/2013 season. It has risen above the Italian Serie A and is now arguably the best league in the world based on the quality of football being played.

For a league to grow and develop, a good structure must be in place, however it is imperative for the best coaches and players to remain or brought into the league. Since switching their focus on youth, Germany has produced several top class players in almost every position and as such the Bundesliga brand started to improve and mesmerize the football world. Bayern Munich’s capture of Pep Guardiola, who is seen as one of the very best coaches in the business, was a huge statement of intent that German football is at a high level and hoping to get even better.

The Bundesliga houses arguably the most talented young players and of course some of the best players in the world ply their trade in Germany. Certainly Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus is one of the best attacking players around and his recent commitment to the BVB is also a testimony of how far the Bundesliga has come. Reus seemingly joined other top talents and players such as Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski staying in Germany which can only allow the German top flight to improve and become a bigger brand globally.

There were fears that the 25 years old speedster would leave the Bundesliga in the summer with several of Europe’s elite cluns hunting his signature as his €25M release clause would become active. He has however signed a new contract which removes the release clause which means Dortmund holds all the cards regarding his foreseeable future. His commitment also proves his loyalty to the club where he was born and bred as they’re facing a situation where they may miss out on Champions League Football next season.

His presence at the Signal Iduna Park will no doubt attract other top players who would like to play alongside or against this technically gifted and imaginative German forward. However most importantly, his presence can only influence others around him to aspire to new heights becoming better at what they do which is ideal for growth and development. The addition of top foreign players and coaches will definitely add fresh impetus and new ideas in the league which can only make it better but retaining the best local talents or products is perhaps of equal importance. It also increases the international audience for the league, increasing the generation of revenue and increasing marketing possibilities.

There are several clubs across Europe and of course fans who are bitterly disappointed by the Reus’ commitment to the BVB. His love for the city and his boyhood club shone through ahead of a better salary and other temptations from abroad. However, the Yellow Wall at the Signal Iduna Park and the entire Bundesliga will be delighted to have one of their very own lighting up the league with the dexterity of his class and will hope other top German talents follow suit and stay in Germany.
