Vaz Prep school held defending Alberga Cup champions Hydel Prep to a 2-2 draw in the final set of quarter-final games on Wednesday, but it was not enough to see them advance to the semi-finals as the best second place team. That honour went to Mona Prep who finished the round with six points and a goal difference of +12. Hydel had two wins and a draw to top their group.
Hydel started strongly and their main player Damoy Whitehorn tested Jalen Young when he fired on target but the Vaz Prep goalkeeper was up to the task and tipped over for a corner.
Whitehorn was the creator of the game’s first goal when he chased down a seemingly lost cause before crossing from the right for Kiovaughn McDermott to side foot home.
Ruboen Brown had a chance to double his team’s lead three minutes later when he got behind the Vaz Prep defence but failed to get proper contact with the ball when one-on-one with Young.
Eight minutes before the break, Whitehorn capitalized on an Imari Harris mishit to run at goal and slot past Young to give his team a 2-0 half time lead.
Hydel continued to have the better of play in the second half without creating many goal scoring chances.
Iyari Harris brought his team back in the contest 11 minutes from time when his fired home into the bottom corner through a crowd of players.
Jhavier Lynch then brought Vaz level a minute from time when he thumped home from the edge of the area. It was too little too late for last year’s beaten finalists, who failed to make the semi-finals of both competitions this year.
Hydel will continue their title defence when they face Hillel Academy in the semi-finals on Saturday at UWI Bowl starting at 3:30pm. The opening semi-final at 2:00pm will see Mona Prep going up against Lannaman’s Prep for the third time this season.
