All systems go for Alliance Buccaneers golf tournament today

The Alliance Buccaneer Memorial two-day Golf Tournament which tees off today at the Caymanas Golf Club at 6:30 am is over subscribed with one hundred and forty entrants of professionals, amateurs and juniors. The draw is complete and therefore no more entries well be accepted.

First up on the course tomorrow morning will be Winston Watson, Bert Rodney and George Kates. Jamaica’s youngest golfer to represent the country at the senior level, Jonathan Newnham will tee off at 8:00 with Justin Burrowes and John O’Donoghue. Defending champion in the pro section Fabian Campbell will take to the course at 12:10 in the afternoon with Wesley Brown who had an outstanding year on the US PGA circuit this year and Paul Warren who won numerous competitions locally.

According to tournament director David Mais the course is as ready as it can at this time. The recent rains at the course means that it will be a little heavy but every effort is being made have it in good enough shape for the golfers who will be on the course.

Some of the other golfers who will be on the course include Professional Ewan Peebles, Super Seniors – Gordon Hutchinson (former president of the JGA), Maurice Foster, Peter Chin (president of JGA) and Teddy Richards; Seniors – Wayne Chai Chong Robert ‘Bobby’ Chin, Rory Jardine, Gregg Chong and Tommy Lee; Men – Paul Thompson and Radcliffe Knibbs; Ladies – Jodi Munn Barrow and Michelle Gabay and Juniors – Khai Harris and Tiana Cruz.

The tournament features two different competitions running concurrently. One will be a two-day – 36-hole Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) qualifier while the other to be played on Sunday will be a modified Stableford competition in the form of a charity fund raiser for the Laws Street Trade Training Centre. The objective for this year is to hand over in excess of the eight hundred thousand dollar to the charity.

The format of play features: Saturday and Sunday – Medal Play HCP 1-12, Modified Stableford HCP 13-24, Professional, Men, Seniors, Super Seniors, Ladies and Juniors while on Sunday it will be Modified Stableford HCP 10-12, 13-24, 25-36, Men and Ladies. The Juniors will compete for the Vitoria Marley Trophy who died in an accident on a golf course. The Juniors will play in the U17, U15 and U13 age groups.

This year’s competition is the nineteenth staging of the Buccaneers Memorial Tournament, and is being played in the memory of five of Jamaica’s outstanding past national representatives, namely Milton ‘Buddy’ Josephs, Izette Rhone, Lenan Lennie Chin, John Fulford and Al Chong.

The title sponsor is Alliance Investment Management while the associate sponsors are AMG Packaging & Paper Company, CGM Gallagher Insurance Brokers, Chad-Ad distributors, Digicel Business Solutions, Remax-Elite, Wata, Maxxis and Supreme Ventures.

The awards presentation ceremony is scheduled for Monday, November 24 at Constant Spring Golf Club in Kingston beginning at 7:00 pm.
