Jamaican fencer Tia Simms-Lyn, who continues to break new grounds for the black, green and gold in a sport virtually unknown to much of the local masses, turned back the challenge of all except one of her more aged competitors to secure a silver in the Commonwealth Fencing Championships being held in Scotland.

The 15 years old, who was the youngest competitor in the field, lost in the goal medal match for the women individual epee to hometown veteran 42-year-old Georgina Usher.

The President of the Jamaican Fencing Federation, James McBean, is singing high praises for Tia’s achievement, he mentioned that “I’d like to salute Tia Simms-Lymn. She’s such an inspiration and a role model to young fencers. Jamaica is proud of her.”

Jamaica’s team to the games also features Caitlin Chang who finished eighth after being beaten by the Scottish champion in the quarterfinal match and Claudine Williams, who copped 29th position, from a field of 64 competitors.

Secretary General of the JFF, Laurel Smith, echoed similar sentiments as the president of the local fencing association said that: “Tia is in record-breaking mode now and this augurs well for Rio and beyond. What gems of talents Jamaica has in Tia and Caitlin.”

They will now turn their attentions to the team championship, with the hope of racking up more silverware.
