JC’s sweet sixteen gets them into Manning Cup semifinal

Jamaica College entered the game against Denham Town High needing to outscore Excelsior High to advance to the semi-finals of the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup competition. Both teams were tied on four points but the Mountain View Avenue based school led by one on goal difference.

Jamaica College started out business-like as they kept control of the ball but was not able create any clear cut chances in the opening ten minutes of the game.

Captain Junior Flemmings converted a chance in the 18th minute to kick-start the JC fight for a semifinals berth. A minute later Donovan Segree double the Old Hope Road school’s advantage after he stayed composed to finish from 9 yards.

Striker Flemmings scored again in the 22nd minute to give JC a three nil advantage. Denham town was getting a couple of passes together but JC stood firm at the back to intercept and push for more goals.

Donovan Dawkins made it 4-0 in the 32nd minute; he went by his marker and fired home from just inside the box.

Jamaica College kept knocking on the door and Flemmings should have had his hat-trick in the 38th minute but he was under pressure from the Denham Town defenders and did not make the right connection with the ball just inside the six yard box.

However, JC won a corner and converted nicely in the 39th minute. Jamaica College was not done for the half as they got another goal to make it half dozen – Donovan Dawkins calmly finishing from 6 yards.

JC restarted the game with the same urgency as in the first half and did not have to wait long for another goal, when Captain Junior Flemmings scored his third and JC’s 7th in the 52nd minute. A floated corner into the box was met by Flemmings who did well to direct this header into the roof of the goal to give the Denham Town custodian no chance of making a save.

JC continued to dominate possession and could have scored when Sheldon McKoy header was saved in the 57th minute by goal keeper Bryan Bennett.

JC did had a rough little period where chances were missed and the supporters were frustrated when news came in that Excelsior was leading Holy Trinity by four goals at half time. Allando Brown tried an overhead kick effort in the 72nd minute but it narrowly missed the goal.

Brown did score from a corner in the 75th minute to get the JC supporters going wild and on their feet shouting for more goals. A brilliant ball came in from the left and when it came to the feet of Akean Shackleford he kicked the ball over the cross bar from three yards out.

Shackleford eventually got on the score sheet in the 79th minute to put away JC’s 8th. Chadwayne Johnson got JC’s 9th when he left his marker for dead and kicked the ball past goal keeper Bennett in the 88th minute.

The fourth official then signalled six minutes of stoppage time and each minute produced a goal.

In the 91st minute Flemmings ran past 4 defenders before scoring past the advancing goal keeper. The JC team received news that Excelsior was leading Holy Trinity 8-0 with 15 minutes to go in that encounter. Captain Flemmings grabbed his 5th goal of the match when he eased past his marker and with the keeper at the top of the 18 yard box he strolled past the custodian and put the ball in the net in the 92nd minute.

JC was quickly taking the ball out the net and putting it back in seconds. Ronaldo Brown ran from the 18 yard box and with no pressure kicked the ball past the goal keeper in minute 93.

Sheldon Mckoy then scored his second goal in the 94th after he received a ball in the box and with no pressure he made no mistake.

Shackleford ran past his marker and tucked away his chance in the 95th minute. Ronaldo Brown got his double in the last minute of stoppage time as the game finished 16-0.
