Western Volleyball Coaches benefit from training

Western Region Coordinator Haile Mika’el conducted a Coaches’ Course on Friday, September 19, 2014 at Santa Cruz Primary & Junior High School as part of the St. Elizabeth (Jamaica Volleyball Association) JaVA/Phillip Greenland Developmental Volleyball Championship 2014 for primary level schools in the parish. It began at 10:30am and ended at 12:06pm.

Attendants
Participating in the event were thirteen (13) students (five females and eight males) from Santa Cruz Primary & JH and six (6) teachers (representing three schools); namely Ms. Suellen Blake and Mr. Delbert Nelson of Santa C P&JH, Mrs. Collett Bailey-Smith and Ms. Julie Sullivan (US Peace Corps) of Geneva Primary and Ms. Tatyana Fiddis and Ms. Jenn Ocampo (US Peace Corps) of Barbary Hall Primary.

The schools had received practice balls from JaVA the previous week.

Content and Format
Mr. Mika’el with the assistance of Ms. Sullivan ensured the Coaches paid attention to the proper execution of the various stages of playing volleyball that he demonstrated that were replicated by both the coaches and students. A net was used throughout on a standard size court.

Warm-up and Cool-down exercises were done before and after the session respectively.

Instruction was given on the Forearm or Underhand Pass; Overhand or Finger Pass (setting); Serving (Underhand, Sideways and Overhead); proper foot-placement; the Three-touch and Rotation rules; and the W Formation. A match was played at the end that allowed each player having a turn at serving.

Coaches were also shown exercises to strengthen players for the sport.

One Day Rally and League
Primary Level schools in the Parish are preparing for the second iteration of the event for which Nain Primary & Junior High is the Defending Champions for both the One Day Rally and League sections and Geneva Primary the Runners-up.

Geneva Primary will host the ODR on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 while Round 1 of the League is set for Friday, November 7, 2014 and the League Final on Friday, November 21, 2014 at venues to be decided at the ODR. Match time is 9:00am each day.

The Parish winner and runner-up will compete in the National Finals on Friday, December 5 at the National Stadium Complex. This is the fifth year at the National Level and the sixth in Westmoreland.
