One of the most highly anticipated mid-season finals of the Sherwin Williams Women’s Football League in many years, is set to take place at 3:30 this afternoon at the Stadium East field. In a rematch of last year’s finals, Barbican FC is set to be sternly tested by the much improved GC Foster College team.

Both Barbican and GC Foster are unbeaten so far this season but what sets the two apart, is that the collegiate team is yet to concede a goal in the six games they have played while boasting the best league goal difference of +27. Barbican on the other hand has conceded once while scoring 20 goals.

GC Foster boasts four national representatives, Monique Pryce, Olivia Reid, Kadeen Salmon and Misty Facey, who have added depth to an already good squad. The experience gained in the World Cup qualifiers should be evident today. Barbican has two players in the national set-up and Trudian Mills was particularly effective for the champions in her first game back after the qualifiers and Yolanda Hamilton whose flexibility makes her an asset, both in defence and attack.

The game promises to be a very exciting affair, but Barbican clearly misses Jodi-Ann McGregor who has moved on to play for the UWI Women’s club team. They have not been as lethal in front of goal and former national representative Tashana Vincent will need to answer the call for her club.

Both teams are equally balanced, but the champions have two of the best midfielders in their team. Alicia James and Rochelle Bryan (formerly of Portmore Strikers) are playing together for the first time at club level and the vastly experienced duo will be expected to guide Barbican past a young and hungry GC Foster team.

The Kurt Brooks conditioned GC Foster team will need little motivation for today’s match and it may come down to a battle of wills to determine the outcome of what is expected to be a keenly contested final.
