Bailey- Cole by a whisker over Powell

Kemar Bailey-Cole continued his good showing this season, notching up his second victory in the space of a week over compatriot Asafa Powell in the men’s 100 metre at the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Challenge meet in Zagreb, Croatia on Tuesday.

On a night when the rains threatened to dampen things, current Commonwealth Champion Bailey-Cole and Powell former Commonwealth Games champion, both crossed the finish line in 10.07 seconds in the men’s 100m. American Mike Rodgers came home third in 10.10 seconds.

Sheldon Mitchell the other Jamaican in the sprint line up finished way down the track. Edino Steele finished at the back of the field in the men’s 400m race. The event went to Martyn Rooney of Great Britain who won in a time of 45.49 ahead of the in form Botswana athlete Isaac Makwala in 45.60s.

Myriam Soumare of France ran 22.75s took care of her competitors in the women’s 200m, scoring a convincing victory over Joanna Atkins of the US, in 22.99s.

The local headliners gave the home crowd something to cheer about, with leading discus thrower Sandra Perkovic winning with a 5th round best throw of 65.09m.

The weather conditions most affected the women’s high jump, where three women managed to beat back the rain long enough to splash their way to 1.93m clearances, with poster girl Ana Simic prevailing on count-back over Blanka Vlasic, another meeting poster girl.

Poland’s world indoor champion Kamila Licwinko was third at the same height.
